Description

PATENTED JAN H. A. SAKS. LADYS AUTOMQBILE HAT.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 12, 1905.
UNITED sures PATENT orrron.
HORACE A.'SAKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO SAKS & COMPANY,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
LADYS AUTOMOBILE-HAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Holmes A. SAKs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ladies Automobile- Hats, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce an automobile-hat intended for ladies use which may be unfolded to protect the hair and which also may be folded in position to appear as an ordinary turban or toque when not in use as an automobile-hat.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the hat as in use with the brim raised. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view of the hat as in use with the brim lowered.
The hat comprises the usual crown 1 and a brim 2, arranged to swing down at an angle to the crown. A hair-protecting shield 3 is attached to the crown and brim, so as to close the space between the crown and brim when the brim is in its unfolded or lowered position,
the said shield being so arranged that it will fold out of sight between the crown'and brim when the brim is in its raised or folded position. The brim is hinged at 4; to the forward portions of the crown at the sides thereof in any desired manner. It is to be understood that the crown and brim may be suitably ornamented and may be made of any desired material. To hold the brim in its raised or folded position, with the shield hidden between the brim and crown, I provide a series of hooks and eyes 5 6.
It will be seen that when the hat is desired for use as an automobile-hat the brim may be released and unfolded, thereby, together with the shield, completely inclosing the back of the head of the wearer and protecting the hair. When desired, the brim may be folded into position over the crown and there secured, if need be, by the fastenings 5 6, thus giving the hat the appearence of an ordinary turban or toque.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. An automobile-hat comprising a crown, a brim arranged to swing down at an angle thereto, and a shield attached to the crown and brim for closing the space between the crown and brim when the brim is lowered.
2. An automobilehat comprising a crown, a brim arranged to swing down at an angle thereto, and a shield attached to the crown and brim for closing the space between the crown and brim when the brim is lowered, the said shield being arranged to fold between the crown and brim when the brim is raised.
3. An automobile-hatcomprising a crown, a'brim arranged to swing down at an angle thereto, and a shield attached to the crown and brim for closing the space between the crown and brim when the brim is lowered, and means for removably holding the brim in its raised position.
4.1m automobile-hat comprising a crown, a brim arranged to swin down at an angle thereto, a shield attached to the crown and brim for closing the space between the crown and brim when the brim is lowered, said shield being arranged to fold between the crown and brim when the brim is raised, and means for removably holding the brim in its raised position.
5. An automobile-hat comprising a crown, a brim hinged to the front of the crown and a loose shield attached to the brim and crown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 23d day of August, 1905.
HORACE A. SAKS Witnesses A. J. MORGAN, G. A. CRosBY.
