IMPROVEMENT IN SOLES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.

TO ALL WHOM lIl MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownv that I, ALEXANDER JOSEPH BASSET, of the cityvand county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a. new and improved Boot and Shoe-Sole; and .I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theiconstruction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a. part of 'this specification; v y I The nature of `my invention consists in arranging the under side or surface of thersoles of boots or shoes, as hereinafter described, soas to prevent the wearer of the same from slippingr or sliding when the sole comes in co ntact witl icy or other smooth surfaces.
To enable others skilled irr the art to make and use my invention, I'will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I'malze, on the under side or surface of 'soles for`boots1and shoes, whether-of India rubber, leather, or other material, a series of circular openings, the interior of said openings, or the space which is intended to act as an air-chamber, being made conical in shape, so that the foot, when resting on the sole, will give its pressure on the apex of the cone, and thus secure such a degree oi' atmospheric pressure or suction as will hold the sole when it comes in contact with icy or Islippery' surfaces, and thus prevent slipping or sliding.
When desired, the openings in the'sole can be made semicircular, or in other forms, so as to answer the same purpose. 1
Having thus deseribedmy invention, its construction and operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-` A sole for boots and shoes, arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose specied.
