Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- C. C. PEASE, OF JAMESTOWN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMISELF, GILESAMILKS, AND S.
B. BRININSTOOL, OF KENNEDY, NEW YORK.
vIMPROVED lNSTEP-STRETCHER.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 73,546, dated January 21, lSGS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. C. PEAsE, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Instep Stretcher and Fitter for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming pa'rt of this specification.
The nature of this invention consists in applying a screw to the purpose of raising and lowering the block on the top of boot and shoe lasts. By this means it obviates a great trouble in using wedges; and for this purpose it consists in a novel fitter, which is susceptible of being used or not, according as may be desired, whereby when the instep is to be raised or lowered t0 fit any measure by simply tu'rning the screw it adjusts the block up or down, as may be desired. For convenience in lasting boots and shoes itcan be lowered and the leather brought easily to its place on the bottom of the last withoutnsing pinchers or other tools, and when made fast on the bottom of the last the instep may be raised or lowered to t the measure by simply turning the screw forward or backward, thus raising 0r lowering said block.
In the accompanying plate of drawings or photographs my improvements are illustrated, Figure 1 being a side viewof the last, and Fig. 2 a screw passing through the top end of instep-block, and Fig. 3 a slot in the last under said block, and Fig. 4 a slide with slot in, so it may play back and forth under the head of a screw and in the slot in said last. The slot being longer than the slide, it is plainly obvious that by tipping the last forward the slide falls down to the lower end of the slot, so the screw can pass by the end of the slide, there being a hole in the last to admit of the entire length of the screw. Below the bottoni of the block, on the top and at one end of the slide, there is a concave, and the end of the screw is convex. It is plainly seen that by turning the screw so the end comes even with the bottom of the block it will clear the slide, so that by tipping the last on an incline the slide falls back to the heel of the last and leaves the concave in line with the end of screw. Thus the use of the same saves time and labor.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- -1. The slide, slot, and screw 2, as herein described, for raising and lowering the instepblock. of a last, as and for the purpose specied.
2. Connecting the slide, slot, and screw to a last when arranged so as to be used and operated for the purpose described.
C. C. PEASE.
