Beit known that I, LEWIS ELLIOTT, Jr., of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Rubber Boots; and I do hereby declare thefollowing, when` taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon', to be a. full, clear, and exact description o f the same, and which said drawings constitute partof this specication, and represent, in i Figure 1, a side View, and in Figures 2, 3, and 4, partial sections, on line a; x,

This invention relates to an improvement'in Vthe construction of Indiarubber boots. 4

As commonly constructed, the upper is of equal thickness at all points, but in Wearing.: suchboots in,

the snow, ice, or mnd, the soleat the shank being narrower than the upper, the upper projects beyond the edge of the sole, so that the upper at that point comes directly in contact with the snow, ice, Sto., in which the wearer isstanding, and thus causes a greater Wear upon the upper at that point than at any other, so that the boot first gives out at that place.

To avoid this, and thus canse the boot to wear longer, .l

is the object of this invention, which' consists in the insertion into the boot, during .the process of construction, at the shank-part, of an extra thickness of rubber, whereby the boot at that point is greatly strengthened.

To enable others to construct my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same, as illustrated'inl the accompanying drawings.

The npperand ,all parts of the boot are formed in the u'su'al manner, but in forming lthe boot upon the last, as seen in iig. 2, the lining a is rst placed upon the last,then, at the shank, a piece of unvulcanized gunna, of the form denoted by the broken line, iig. 1 and as denoted in blue, g. 2, is placed ou to the 1ining, then over that the vamp b, then over that th'e upf' per, e, then the sole placed thereon, and the Whole finished by the process of vulcanization in the u'sual manner, the upper, at the shank, being` strengthened and sustained by the additional part d.

Or, as seen in g. 3, the piece d is placed between .the vamp and the-upper, and this method I think the best.

Or, as seen in fig. 4, the extra piece 'd may beplaced upon the outside.

The `-best finish is, however, produced-'bythe rst'arrangement of the piece d, though the object is accomplished by either. Having thus fully describedrny invention, What I claim as new and useful,'anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The insertion or application ofthe piece d upon one or bothsides of the upper, at the shank, but separate from' the sole, and the whole secured to the sole, sub- 'stantially as herein set forth.
