Leaf-Holders for Use in Transferring Entries; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to means for use in transferring entries from one leaf or sheet of a bank-ledger or other book to another leaf or sheet of the same book, so as to facilitate the transfer of the entries and to insure the entries being transferred to the proper line or lines of the sheet or leaf to which they are transferredwith accuracy. 7

To the accomplishment of the object mentioned and such others as may hereinafter appear, the inventionconsists in a base or plate designed to receive the leaves or sheets in a manner hereinafter described and provided with a clamp designed to secure the leaves or sheets to the base or plate while the transfer of entries is being made from one leaf or sheet to another and also in the manner in which the leaves or sheets are arranged upon the transfer base or plate, all of which will be hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

In the drawings the numerals 1 and 2 designate two of the leaves or sheets of a book, which may be formed of any desired number of leaves, and in the form illustrated the leaves are such as are commonly used in bank-ledgers or account-books, being properly ruled for the various entries and for convenience in following the lines for the different entries, having the lines numerically designated at various points across the leaves or sheets. Assuming the book to be a bankledger, the names of the depositors will be inscribed in the column provided for names, and theentries of-deposits made and checks drawn will be entered in their appropriate columns and the balances noted in the proper columns for the same. When the sheet has become filled and the names of the depositors and their balances are to be transferred to another leaf or sheet, the same is effected in the following manner by the use of my invention. The numeral 3 designates a plate or base of any suitable material, and 4 designates a clamp consisting of two parallel members spaced apart and formed with a connecting neck or loop 5 at one end and at the other end being suitably hinged to the base 3 in such manner that when the clamp is lowered onto the base 3 it will bind and securely hold to the base the leaf or leaves of the book, which may be folded onto the base so as to lie between it and the clamp. For the purpose of holding the clamp in its binding position on the base a suitable lock or fastener is provided, and as an illustration of one form suitable for the purpose I have illustrated a thumb-nut 6, which works upon a threaded pin 7, so positioned in relation to the connecting-neck of the two parallel bars of the clamp that when the clamp is in its folded position and the thumb-nut is turned upon its threaded pin it will lap over the connecting neck or loop of the clamp, and thus securely hold the clamp in its binding position.

When the entries are to be transferred, the sheet or leaf from which the transfer is to be made is folded upon itself from the righthand side or the end upon which the last balances are entered and then given a reverse fold, so that a portion of the leaf or sheet will lie on the under side of the base 3 and the reverse fold portion will lie on top of said base, with the last-balance column of the leaf eX- posed on top of the base. The leaf or sheet to which the entries are to be transferred has its left-hand end folded onto the top of the base 3, so as to bring its name-column and first-balance column adjacent to the last-balance column of the preceding leaf or sheet which has been folded upon the base, as previously described, and the lines of the leaf to which the entries are to be transferred are brought into register with corresponding lines of the leaf from which the entries are to IIO be transferred. With the leaves thus folded and arranged upon the base the clamp 3 is folded so as to bear upon the leaves and the fastening device is tightened so that the clamp will securely bind the leaves in the position mentioned. This will hold the leaf from which the entries are to be transferred and the leaf to which they are to be transferred in a fixed relation to each other, so that the names upon leaf 1 may be readily transcribed from that leaf into the main column of leaf 2, and the balances from leaf 1 appearing neXt to the main column of leaf 2 may be transcribed to the balance-column of leaf 2. in register with the corresponding lines of leaf 1 and the two leaves at their folded portions on the base 3 will be held against movement the entries can be readily transcribed from one leaf to the other and with accuracy. This greatly facilitates the transfer of entries from one leaf to another and also insures the transfer being made with absolute accuracy, inasmuch as one leaf is held in a fixed position in relation to the other, so that the eye can readily and with certainty follow the lines of each individual account, and thus insure the accurate transfer of accounts from one sheet to another of the entry or ledger book.

The transfer-base 3 and transfer-clamp 4 may be made of any suitable material, and it is preferred to make both the base and the clamp adjustable as to length, so as to be adjusted to books of different sizes. For instance, the base 3 may be formed of two light sheetmetal telescoping sections A and B, one of which may be formed with a bead a, fitting in a groove 1) in the other section, so that the two sections will slide one upon the other and yet be held together by the bead and groove. This will enable the base to be made light in weight and at the same time adjustable to different lengths. The parallel bars of the clamp 3 may also be formed of telescoping sections 0 and D and formed one With a bead Inasmuch as the lines of leaf 2 will be 0 and the other with a groove (1, so that they will be held together by frictional contact of the beads and the grooves and at the same time be free to be adjusted as to length. This is given merely as one illustration of various ways in which the parts maybe rendered adjustable.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim is 1. The combination with a book, of means for holding leaves in transferring entries from one leaf to another, consisting of a base lying between folds in adjacent leaves, one leaf lying under the base and having a reverse fold from one side of the base so as to lie on top thereof, and the end portion of another leaf laid upon the base from the other side thereof, and a clamp for holding the leaves in such position upon the base, substantially as described.

2. The means for holding leaves in transferring entries from one leaf to another of a book, consisting of a base, a clamp hinged to the base and comprising two parallel members spaced apart and connected together at one end by a neck opposite the hinged end, and means for holding the clamp in its position on the base, said means being, located at the opposite end of the base from where the clamp is hinged so as to engage the connecting-neck of the clamp, substantially as described.

3. The means for holding leaves in transferring entries from one leaf to another of a book, consisting of a base formed of adjustable members to vary its length, a clamp hinged to the base and formed of adjustable members to vary its length, and means for holding the clamp in its position on the base, substantially as described.

It is hereby certified that the residence of the patentee in Letters Patent No. 809,128, granted January 2, 1906, upon the application of John Martin Dasher McGregor, for

an improvement in Leaf-Holder for Use in Transierrlng Entries, was erroneously -written and printed Ailey, Alabama, whereas said residence should have been written and printed Ailey, Georgia; and that said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
