UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR LOOSE-LEAF BINDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
Application filed April 26,1905. Serial No. 257,555.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH BNVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devicesfor Loose -Leaf Binders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in paper-files; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efiicient apparatus of this nature in which papers, letters, (520., may be securely locked in a temporary binder.
The invention consists in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, in which drawings Figure l is a perspective view of my improved binder, showing leaves locked thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. i. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4: is a sectional view on line 4. 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 5 5 of Fig. at. Fig. 6 is a sectional View on line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the longitudinally-movable plates and means for actuating the same. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the wedge-shaped member.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and A designate the two covers of the temporary binder, the former of which is connected to a cross-piece B, and the latter is connected to a boxing C. Said cross piece or bar B carries the posts D, which are securely anchored thereto, and each of said posts is hollow, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and has a threaded wall adapted to receive a plug (Z. In the drawings there are shown two of said posts adapted to pass through registering apertures E E in plates E (shown in Figs. 5 and 7 of the drawings) and through corresponding apertures in the boxing. The plates E have apertures e in the inner and outer ends thereof, and lugs F are fastened to the bottom of the boxing and have shouldered portions F, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, upon which the plates E are supported, the apertures E in said plates being of sufiicient size to allow limited longitudinal movements to said plates. The inner ends of the plates E are inclined, as shown at E in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and g designat'es a block which is shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 as being fastened to the top and bottom of said boxing and is centrally apertured to receive a screw H, one end of which is squared, as at H, to fit a key whereby the screw may be rotated. The inner end of said screw has a head 72 which is swiveled to the angled flange K of a plate K, said swiveled portion turning in a groove h. (Shown clearly in Fig. 8 of the drawings.) Said plate K has two arms K which are spaced apart, and the outer marginal edges K of said arms are inclined and are adapted to engage the inner inclined ends of the plates E, (shown clearly in Fig. 5 of the drawings,) while the space intermediate the arms is adapted to receive the block Gr and guide the plate as it is moved backward and forward by means of the turning of the screw H. The boxing G has an aperture C opposite the end of the screw H, whereby the key may be inserted within the boxing for engagement with said screw.
It will be observed upon reference to Figs. 2 and L of the drawings that the marginal edges of the apertures E are brought to a sharp edge for the purpose of biting into the circumference of the posts D when said plates E. are forced frictionally against the posts by the movement of the inclined edges K against the inclined ends of the plates E, thereby securely holding the boxing to the posts, and consequently locking the papers between the covers.
Having thus fully described my'invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A locking mechanism for binders, comprising, in combination with the covers, a bar connected to one of said covers, posts secured to said bar, a boxing secured to the other cover and having registering apertures through which said posts are adapted to pass, longitudinally-movable plates mounted within said boxing and having inclined ends and apertures to receive said posts, the marginal outline of said apertures being brought to cutting edges, lugs projecting from the wall of the boxing and adapted to engage and guide said longitudinally-movable plates, a lug fastened to the boxing and having a screw-threaded aperture, a screw passing through said threaded aperture, an angled plate in which the head of said screw is sWiveled, said angled plate having a slot, the marginal edges of which engage the opposite edges of said screw-carrying lug and the outer edges of said angled plate being inclined, and adapted to engage 10 the inner inclined edges of said longitudinallymovable plates, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affiX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
RALPH B. WVILSON. Witnesses:
