UNITED STATE PATENT,
nnocK, rE NsYLvANI A, ass euon or one HALF T0 JAMES H. MULLEN, or MONONGAHELA, PENNSYLVANIA.
' To all; whom, it may concern:
Be it known that Ldussu R. OAkLEY, a
citizen'of the United States, residing atBraddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented: new and useful Improvements in Commode Attachments for \Vater Closets for Childremof which the fol-" lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improve-.
meutsin wh'atmay'be styled""seat or com:
mode attachments forwater closets for children. p, V Said' invention has for its object to readily accommodate or adapt water-closets for the,
use of children and to carry outthis purpose in a simple, expeditious-and;effectiveman- It eon sistsflof certain" structural: features substantially as hereinafter f'ully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanyingd ra'wings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention,"
Figure 1 is;a side elevatiom and Fig. 2 is'a front elevation, of the invention or attach.- ment. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, and Fig. 4
is an inverted plan view,-therof. I .Fig. 5 isa' folded or collapsed view of the same, and Fig. 6 is a broken-away view showing more particularly said attachment as when applied to the outer edges of the closet bowl or hopper.
In the disclosure of my invention I provide a seat or board 1, having the usual orifice or opening l, therethrough for an obvious purpose and which board has a back 2, suitably hinged thereto and retained in its normal or effective position by means of jointed or foldiug lateral braces 3,pivotally connected thereto and to said seat. The hinging of said back to said seat is effected, preferably, by the use of triangular vastings or plates 4, having.
their horizontal portions secured laterally to the former and their vertical portions'iu like manner to the latter. At the forward end of said seat or board 1 is applied a foot-rest 5,

rest when in :collapsed condition. It will be s noted that theaugularrdpper end portions 5? .of the-suspenders 5: are laterally let intocuts away portions or recesses l of the seat or board 1 .at'its forward edge and that the shoulders 1"? thus formed upon-said board or 66 seat in 'rear of said recess are inclined down ward and rearward toacc'ommodate theangularity of said upper end portions, whereby said suspenders -arexnot only braced by the" contact of the latter-with said shouldersas 65- they are, but they are'eau'sed to stand later: ally of and flank-the top edge of the-closet bowl, as indicated by Fig.1;aud thu's' serve to guard against the lateral displacementof I the seat .or attachment at itsforward'portion 7o wheuin-positio upon-said bowl, "as is appa rent.
. Clamps (two sets) 6 7' are suitably applied to and adjustable upon the under side of" the seat or board 1 near its rear edgeand of tl-ie-ge'u 7 5 eral construction shown" particularly inFig'.
3, being preferably of stiff strap -"m'etal and conforming tothe contour of the topedg'e or rolliof the closet bowl, one set being applicableto the outer lateral surface'thereot 8o and the other set to the inner corresponding" surface of the same, as seen in Figs. 3'and 6, respectively, as may be desired, as presently more fully explained. The adjustment of said clamps is effected, preferably, by means 5 of longitudinal slots 6 and 6, produced therein, respectively, and receiving set and hold ing screws 6 and 6, engaging or working in the seat or board 1 from its under side.
It is observed that in using said attachment 9o as a commode in connection with a watercloset by preference'the clamps 6 are initially adjusted inward to enable the seat or board to rest upon the roll ortop edge of the'closethow], afterwhichsaid clamps arie readjusted 95 to effectively engage the inner lateral edgesof the roll of the bowl at said edge, as dis-- closed especially by Fig. 3. At the same time 45 suitably pivoted at its rear end to and so as to fold in between lateral pendent bars or suspenders 5", having upper angular formations 5, in turn pivoted at their extremities to said seat, further later referred to. Said 59 foot-rest is upheld, as shown, by lateral jointed braces 5*, also pivoted near its forward edge and to the suspenders 5 upon their inner sides at about their mid-lengths and are adapted to permit the infolding of said foot-' the foot-rest suspenders 5 will assumesuch a, 1 relation or position, as above noted, to the 0' closet-bowl top edge or roll as to stand laterally of the latter, and thus become efictive to J guard the seat'or board againstrl'ateral displacement at that end. 5 As shown by Fig. 6, the clamps 7 may be ,m's brought into requisition or service,if desired orit should become necessary to make connectiou with the outer lateral surfaces of the closet-bowl roll. In that event the clamps 6 are removed and the clamps 7 are reversed or arranged so as to cause their hooked end per;
tions to engage said outer Surfaces of the;

closet-bowl roll. 2"
After use the attachment is remoyed from the closet-bowl and may be readily folded or" collapsed into compact form or compass, as shown by Fig. 5, and be conveniently set aside w for future use.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein to permit changes thereof as circumstances may suggest without departing from the spirit of my i nvention.
' 5 1 claim 3 justable with relation to the closet-bowl, at its top edge, and adapted to engage the inner and outer lateral surfaces of the closet-bowl atitstop edge, respectively.
4; 'An. article of the characterdescribed,
comprising a seat having applied to its under side meansfor securing it to a closet-bowl, at
its upper edge, and a foot-rest having sussoenvet penders provided with upperangular end porv tions connected laterally-to said seat said seat havifig lateral recesses at its forward edge to 40 receive said suspender angular end portions -5." An article of the character described, cdmprising a seat having lateral-recesses, at
its forward edge, the shoulders formed by'said recesses having downward and rearward inclined surfaces, and a foot-rest having lateral suspenders provided with upper end angular portions connected laterally to said seat, within said recesses, and adapted to bear against 5 said inclined shoulders of the seat. i
- 6. Achilds commode attachment for waterclosets, comprisingaseat having applied to the appropriate surface thereof opposed, clamps having normally outer downward-curved ter- 'minals, effective for engagement with the closet-bowl upper edgeand set-screws working in slots in said clamps.
7. A childs commode attachment for waterclosets having applied to the appropriate sur- 6O face thereof two setsof clamps, one set being arranged oppositely tothe other set, and each set consisting of two clamp-bars having op posite downward-curved terminals eflective to engage the inner and outer upper edges of the 5 closet-bowl,respectively,and set-screws working in slots of said clamp-bars.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
