7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CERNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jefferson Barracks, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rests for Toiletseats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved rest for water closet or toilet seats, whereby the partyusing the seat, may have the body supported, thus making the device especially desirable for invalids, or persons that desire an arm and back rest while seated.
A further object of this invention is the provision of hinged connection of the back and arm rest to the seat, so that the same may be moved with the seat, there being provision made of attaching the rest to a flushtank hopper or the large pipe leading from the flush tank.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character that is easily applied, is ornamental and neat in appearance, inexpensive, and durable in construction, and thoroughly efficient and practical in use.
In the accompanying drawings:Figure l is a perspective view of a water closet of the low hopper type with the present invention in operable relation therewith. Fig, 2 is a side elevation of the same with the seat and rest elevated. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the invention per 86. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views of various parts that make up the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the back and arm rest, which is U-shaped in plan, and may be made of any material, preferably wood. The hing ing member 11, is employed to connect the rest to the hopper 13, while the clamp carrying hinging member 12 is employed to attach the same to the pipe 14, when a high hopper or flush tank is in use.
Connected to the underside of each ter minal or forward end of the rest 10 is a plate 15, which is provided with the hinging lug 16, for the reception of the hinging end of the supporting brace 17 there being two of these braces. The lower end 18 of each brace 17 is offset and apertured to receive the threaded shank 19, having the capped nut 20, the other end of the shank being provided with the securing apertured plate 21, which is adapted to be attached to the underside of the seat 22, of the water closet. By this arrangement, the rest 10 may assume either of the positions as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the raising or lowering of the seat, imparting movement to and regulating the position of the rest 10.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that the present attachment may be quickly and readily attached to the high or lower flush tank water closet, and that a rest for the back and arms of the occupant will be provided.
What I claim, as new, is:
1. The combination with a vertically swinging seat, of a substantially horseshoeshaped arm support, means swingingly connecting the arm support medially thereof to a stationary part at a point elevated above the seat, a pair of plates fixed to the underside of the seat at opposite sides and having outwardly extending threaded shanks, a pair of braces loosely engaged on the shanks, pivot plates fixed to the underside of the arm support at opposite sides and loosely engaged with the pair of braces to hold said arm support in parallelism with the seat when in raised vertical or lowered horizontal position and capped nuts detachably engaged on the threaded shanks.
2. The combination with a vertically swinging seat, of a substantially horseshoe shaped arm support, means swingingly connecting the arm support medially thereof to a stationary part at a point elevated above the seat, a pair of plates fixed to the underside of the seat at opposite sides and having outwardly extending threaded shanks, a pair of braces loosely engaged on the shanks, pivoted plates fixed to the underside of the arm support at opposite sides and loosely engaged with the pair of braces to hold said arm support'in parallelism with the seat when in raised vertical or lowered horizontal position and capped nuts detachably engaged on the threaded shanks, said braces each being formed with a pair of bends for offsetting a major portion thereof with respect to the remaining portion of the same.
