ATTACHMENT FOR HINGED SEATS.

To all whom. it may concern:

Be it known that I, VVESLEY G. 1mins, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Hinged Seats; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for hinged seats for holding the seats in a vertical position when not in service.

The object of this invention is to provide an attachment of this character which will be durable, which will be inconspicuous and occupy but a small space and which can be readily and easily secured to the seat support without altering the hinge connection between the seat support and the seat. I

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which can be adjusted to suit the weight of the seat to which it is to be attached.

My invention, therefore, consists in the features of construction and combination of parts as described in the specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown my device applied to a closet bowl and Figure 1 is a side elevation of a closet bowl, seat and cover provided with my attachment, the raised position of the seat and cover being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same with the seat in a vertical position. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the bowl, with the seat and cover down, showing the device in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a section on line 55, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a section on line 66, Fig. 5.

Again referring to the drawings 1 denotes a closet bowl of the common form having at the rear thereof a projection or shelf 2. The cover and seat are indicated by 3 and at respectively. The hinge members 6 which are mounted on the bowl are provided with shank portions 10 which extend through the shelf 2 and on each shank portion 10 near its upper end is arranged a rigid collar 11. The lower end of each shank portion 10 is screw-threaded and provided with a nut 12 by means of which the collar on the shank portion can be drawn tight against the upper surface of the shelf 2, thus firmly holding the members in position.

My attachment comprises a narrow plate 15 which is adapted to reston the upper surface of the shelf 2 of the bowl. The plate 2 is provided with a notch 16 at one end and with an L-shaped slot 17 which is spaced from the end slot 16 the same distance as the distance between the shank portions of The method of securing this plate to the bowl is as follows :The nuts on the ends of the shank portions 10 of the hinge members 6 are loosened so that the shank portions can be brought up sufliciently to permit the plate 15 being inserted between the collar 11 thereon and the upper surface of the shelf 2, one of the shank portions being received in each of the

16 and 17 and the nuts on the ends of the shanks are then drawn tight and the plate 15 is securely held in position. Near one end of the plate 15 is mounted a screw-threaded stud or bolt 18. On the end of the plate 15 is mounted a small angleshaped bracketor spring supporting member 19 having a foot piece 20 provided with a slot 21 which receives the stud 18. The bracket 19 is provided at its upper end with a socket 22 which receives a small shaft or pin 23. This shaft or pin 23 serves to support a coil spring 24 which w1ll be more fully described hereinafter. On the foot piece of the said bracket 19 is arranged a member 25 which forms a stop for the seat and cover when in their raised position and also carries the adjusting means for regulating the tension of the spring 24;. This member 25 has a foot piece 26 which has a slot 27 which receives the aforementioned stud 18, and the said foot piece 26 and the said foot piece are clamped down on the plate 15 by means of a nut 28 Wl'iiChBH- gages the said stud 18. In the member is formed a vertical slot 30 and the front face of said member in proximity to said slot isserrated or corrugated, as shown at 31. A small plate 32 is arranged on the front face of said member 25 so as to extend across thesaid slot 30 and is secured to said member by means of a bolt 33and the said the said slot 30 in the member 25 and the plate 32 is serrated to correspond to the serrations on thesaid member 25. One end of the spring 24 is arranged to pass through 7 other end of the spring is carried under the seat 4 and is operatively connected thereto by means of a strap 35.

1. The combination with a support and a seat hinged thereto, of a bracket mounted on said support, a member mounted on said support and having a vertically arranged slot and a coil spring supported by said bracket, one end of said coil spring extending into the said slot in said member and the other end of said coil spring engaging the under side of the seat.

2. The combination with a support and a seat hinged thereto, of a bracket mounted 011 said support, a member mounted on said support and having a vertically arranged slot, a plate slidably adjustable on said member and extending across said slot and a coil spring supported by said bracket, one end of said coil spring extending into said slot in said member below said plate and the other end of said coil spring engaging the under side of said seat.

3. The combination with a support and a seat hinged thereto, of a bracket mounted on said support at the rear of said seat and adjustable toward and away from said seat, a member mounted on said support at the rear of said seat and adjustable toward and away from said seat, said member being provided with a vertical slot, a plate slidably mounted on said member and extending across said slot and a coil spring supported by said bracket, one end of said coil spring extending into said slot in said member below said plate and the other end of said spring engaging the under side of said seat.

4. The combination with a supportand a seat hinged thereto, of a bracket mounted on said support, a member mounted on said support and having a vertically arranged slot, a pin supported "by said bracket and a coil spring mounted on said pin, one end of said coil spring extending into said slot in said member and the other end of said coil spring engaging the under side of the seat. 7

The combination with a support and a seathinged thereto, of a plate secured to said support at the rear of said seat, a bracket having a foot piece provided with a slotarranged on the end of said plate, a stop-forming member having a foot piece provided with a slot mounted on the foot piece of said bracket, a screw-threaded stud extending up from said plate through the slots in the foot piece of said bracket and said stop-forming member, a nut arranged on the upper end of said stud, a plate slidably mounted on said stop-forming member, a pin mounted on said bracket, and a coil spring arranged on said pin, one end of said coil spring being arranged to engage the loweredge of said plate and the other end of said spring being arranged to engage the under side of said seat.
