I F. MINGK. WRENCH AND PIPE CUTTER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 22; 1905- WlTNESSES i K INVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES- P T OFFICE.
FERDINAND MINCK, or DANBURY, CONNECTICUT.
WRENCH AND To LLZZ who 7n it may cm werm: v
Be 1t known that I, FERDINAND MINoK, a
citizen of the United States, residing at D an-.
bury, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a newand useful Wrench and Pipe-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to rovide a simple and inexpensive hand-too which shall be easilyconvertible into either a wrench or a pipe-cutter.
. elevation of a movable wrench-j aw and slide detached. 10 denotes the body and 11 the fixed jaw which is formed integral therewith.
12 denotes a sliding wrench-jaw and 13 a sliding cutting-j aw, each of which is formed integral with a slide 14., adapted to slide in a way 15, formed in the body, the slides being interchangeable. The body is also preferably provided at the center of the way with a transverse rib 16, and the slides are provided with grooves 17, which receive the rib. 18 denotes the face-plate, which is secured to the body by screws 19, The fixed jaw is provided with a socket 20, in which a cuttingdisk 21 may be pivoted, as upon a screw-stud 22, when the tool is to be used as a pipe-cutter. When the tool is to be used as a wrench,
this disk is of course removed. The cuttingjaw is provided with a recess 23, in which two cutting-disks 2 1 are pivoted. For ordinary use as a wrench it is contemplated to remove the sliding cutting-j aw 13 and replace it with the sliding wrench jaw l2. If preferred, however, the cutting-disks may be removed from the cutting-j aw, and that-jaw may be used as a wrench-j aw, the shape of both the fixed and sliding jaws being wholly immaterial so far as the principle of the invention is concerned.
24 denotes the handle, which is pivoted in a recess 25 at the rear end of the body, ordinarily upon a a screwbolt 26, which passes Specification of Letters Patent.
' Application filed August 22, 1905- Serial No. 275,256.
PIPE-CUTTER.
Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
I through the handle, body, and face-plate and is shown as provided with a wing-nut 27 for convenience in removal. The forward end of the handle is adapted to suitably engage the slide, as at 28, so that oscillation of the handle will reciprocate the slide with whichit is engaged and carry the movable jaw into operative position, in which position it is'retained by-pressure upon the handle.
When thet'ool is to be used as apipe-cuttrr, a locking-screw 29 is provided which bears against the handle to lock the handle and with it the sliding cutting jaw in operative position. This screw is provided with a finger-piece 30 for convenience in operation. As
the cutting operation proceeds the o erator turns this screw'inward against the andle, and thereby feeds the cutting-j aw forward. The locking-screw is carried by a removable bracket 31, which is secured to the body by'a screw 32. In order to give additional rigidity to this bracket, a yoke 33 is provided, which incloses the bracket and looks it rigidly .in place. This bracket is shown as locked to the body by means of screw-bolt 26. The yoke straddles the body and the screw-bolt passes through both arms of the yoke, as is clearly shown. When the tool is used as a wrench, a shorter screw-bolt may be used.
The operation-of the tool as a pipe-cutter will be readily understood from Figs. 1,2, and 3, in which I have indicated a pipe being operated upon by dotted lines in connection with the description already iven. When the'tool is used as a wrench, -a sIiding wrenchj aw may be substituted for the sliding outting-j aw and the locking-screw, bracket, and yoke removed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a tool of the character described a body portion havin a fixed jaw, a movable jaw having a slidab e on agement with said body portion, a handle pivoted in said body and having means adapted to engage with and move-the slidable jaw, a bracket carried by the body ortion, and means carried by the said bracket adapted to retain the handle in a position whereby the handle will hold the movable jaw in an operative position.
2. In a tool of the character described, a body portion provided with a fixedjaw, a movable jaw having a slidable engagement with the said body portion, a handle pivoted to said body portion, said handle. having a portion adapted to engage with and move the movable jaw, a bracket provided with means for limiting the movement of said handle to retain the movable jaw in operative position, and means for detachably securing said bracket to the body portion.
3. A tool of the character described comprising a body having a transverse way and a fixed jaw, a movable jaw adapted to be slidingly mounted in said transverse way, a handle pivoted in the body and engaging with said movable jaw, a bracket detachably secured to the body and a lockingscrew in said bracket adapted to bear against the handle to lock the movable jaw in operative position.
4. In a tool of the character described the combination with a body having a fixed jaw provided with a recess, said body being provided with a transverse way, a movable jaw slidingly mounted in said transverse way, a handle pivoted to the body and adapted to engage with the said movable jaw, for the purpose set forth, a bracket, a locking-screw in said bracket adapted to engage the handle to lock the movable jaw in operative position, and means for detachably securing said bracket to the body portion.
5. In a tool of the' character described the combination with a body having a fixed jaw provided with a recess, a movable jaw slidingly.n1ounted in said body, said movable jaw being provided with recesses, a handle pivoted to the body and adapted to engage with the movable jaw, a detachable bracket, a locking-screw in said bracket adapted to lock the movable jaw in operative position and a yoke inclosing the bracket and secured to the body for retaining the bracket rigidly in place.
In testimony whereof I al'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
