TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Y
Be it known that I, FREDERIC J. PEABODY, of Medford, in the county of Middlesemand State of Massa-v chusetts, have invented an Improvement in Studs forWearing-Apparel, of which the following' is 'a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in Whichn Y Figure 1 is a perspective 'view of a'stud having my improvement applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a plan of the under side of the same.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of 'the same.
Figure 4 is a section on the line a: :o of iig. 2. Studs for wearing-apparel have been constructed witha slit in the back or disk, extending vfrom the cir. eumference to the shank, one of the edges of the slit being raisediwith respect to the other, so that the stud could be turnedinto the button-hole in a manner similar to n screw.` A stud constructedin this manner,
although itmay he easilyrinserted into the buttonhole,`is, nevertheless, objectionable, for the reason that an opening or break is left-in the periphery ofthe back, and the raised -edgeof the slit is liable to catch in .the
edge-of the button-hole, thus endangering the loss of the stud inthe event of its being accidentally turned backward by the movements of the wearer.
-My invention has for its objectto4 overcome this objection, and consists in a stud, the hacker inner plate of which is divided onone side into two portions, which are bent or curved around in opposite directions, so asV toI overlap' each other for 'a considerable distance, leaving -no opening or break in the periphery-of the inner plate, and avoidingthe danger of loss-incident to stndshconstructed'as first described. v
'lo4 enable others skilled in the art to understand and use-my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out. l 4 l In the said drawings, A. represents the front portion or face of a stud, from which projects the' shank a, to which is attached the back or inner plate B; This plate'ris divided on one side into two portions, b c,which.are bent or curved around in opposite directions, and are of a suioient length to overlap each other'for a considerable distance, thus forming a'portin of va. screw, as seen in fig. 3, the tivo portions b and c lying close to each other, so as'nt to materially increase the thickness of the platefB. Y
When the lstud is to be applied to a garment, the point of the curved portionb of the plate B is inserted into the button-hole, and the stud turned until the whole plate'has 'passed through to the other side, when it will be securely'fastened' in place, and as the' line of the periphery of'lthe inner plate B is unbroken, and the point of .the portion c lies close to this plate B, there is little or no liability of the stud becoming accidentally detached from the garment, andrmy improvement is therefore applicable to studs and buttons of great value, whiehhas not-been the case withdevices containing the screw-principle as heretofore constructed.
I am aware thatI the back of a stud has been constructed with a slit, extending from its circumference to theshank, so that the stud could be turned into the button-hole in a manner similar'to ascre'w, and also that a stud has been provided with a wire shank-extending from its centre, and bent around in a. helix or spiral form. I therefore-lay no cla-im to these features; but` J What I do elaimas my invention, and desire tn secnre by Letters Patent, is?- A stud or button, having its back or inner 4plate vvB divided on one vside into two portions, c, which are bent or curved around nopposi't'e directions, so as to overlap' each other, substantially inthe manner and for the purpose set forth.
FRED. J. PEABODY.
