Description
@wat A @Inline CHARLES L. POTTER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent lilo. 110,070, dated December 13, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR ATTACHING THE SHANKS TO MINERAL AND COMPOSITION BUTTONS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'itunuty concern.-
13e it` known that I, CHARLES L.`Io'11nu, of the city and county of Providence, in the State ot' Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Devices for Att-aching the Shanks to Mineral and Composition Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken 'in connection with the drawing making a part ot' the. same, is a full` clear, and exact description thereof. i
Figure 1 is a side view ot' the button.
Figure 2 shows, in section, the device by which the shank is attached to the button.
'Figure 3 is a view of the under side of the button the spiral portion of the shank being removed.
Aconvenient and very common way of attaching pearl or mineral-coin position buttons of different kinds to clothing is by means ot -a helical shank, the end of which being entered into a small circular button-hole, the button is t-lu'ncd with the fingers until the shank has been advanced into the hole through all the convolutions of the-spiral.
Much ditiiculty has been experienced in attaching such shanks tothe head so as to prevent them from becomingloosened by the operation of screwing in and out the button, and it is the purpose of my invention to furnish an improved means for effecting such attach men t.
In the drawing.-
y AV represents a. button-head of any preferred form,
lthe material heilig pearl, glass, mineral-compositieu, or other material commonly used in suoli manufactures, with which solder cannot be. used.
B represents the common helical shank.l
The usual mode ot attachment has heen tosink a dorata-il circular cavity inthe bottom ot' the butt-on aiidiusert therein a plate, a., corresponding in form 'and size, to be held by 'cement or burnished down at the edge. To this platethe shank is soldered.
I ina-ke use ot' the same'device, but in addition thereto I employ a metallic'cross-bar. I), which is soldered to the plate a. or to 'the shank, and is to be let into channels cut in the bot-tom radial to the shank.
The ends ot' such cross-bar should also he bent, so
' as to enter holes drilled in the bnttonhead at the end of such channels.
f After the plate a has been set in its cavity in the Ausual way the` cross-bar should be burnished down Witnesses:
IE'rnn F. HUGHES, Onvrnnn Peck-iran.'
