To all whom et may concern;

j Be it known that I, WILAM E. CLARKE, of Troy,

`in thelcounty of Rensselaer and State of New? York,

have invented a new improved Joint for Tongs, Snc.; and I do hereby declare that the following :is 'a fnll, clear, and exact'. description thereof', which willenable others skilled in the art to make and nsethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side -view,'part-1y `in-section,` of myimproved joint, showing it on the tongs. `Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.

Figure 3 is a yface View of one plate ofthe joint. Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts: l t t ,j This invention relates toa new joint for 'ice-tongs and other tongs, and similar purposes, `being' particularly adapted to tongs made of wire, although it may also be` used on articlesmade of dierent material.

. The invention consists cbieiiy in making the joint of two plates, which are pivoted together, and which are so shaped as to receive andc'onceal the shanks of the tongs, as hereinafter more fully described.

These plat-'es are of circular forni, andare connected bya screw-bolt or pin, C, which passes through their centers, as shown. Y

' Each platehas a depression or recess, a, in its inner face, for receiving one of the' shanks, theysad sbanks being bent, to clear the pin C, as shown in iig. 1.' I

`The recess ain each plate B is concealed by a surrounding ange, b, so as not to be perceptible from th'e outer side., V l

The recess is in one half only of each plate B. 'lhe other half', c, is left solid, as shown in fig. 2.

A prong, d, projects from the solid half c of each plate B, into the recess on .the opposite plate, and serves, as it tits ngainstthe innerfaee of the flange b, to steady and guide the plates during their motion on the pivot.,

Each shank A is, by thisarrangement, secured in its plate B, soA that it .cannot turn in, but only with said plate, and a swivel joint is thus produced, which will operate without much `friction, and .perfectly steady.

One great advantage of this joint is that it permits the use of the wire sbanks in their simplest form.

- Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pa`tentV v 1. The swivel point, consisting of the plates B Band pin (Leach plate having a recess on one side, for' the reception of one tong-shank, as set`fort-b.

2. The wire tongs, arranged in combination with 4a swivel point, consisting of circular plates B, in the manner described. j
