To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, DAVID T. MATTHEW, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in convertible chairs; and the primary object thereof is to provide a construction which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture.

Further objects and-advantages will be set forth in the following description and those features of construction upon which I desire protection succinctly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a view in perspective, illustrating my improvement in unfolded position and provided with a removable frame which forms the back of the settee and having an ironing-board removably connected thereto. in perspective of the improvement inverted,

' the parts being arranged to provide a crib.

Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the two sections of the chair folded. Fig. 4 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of the two sections, one being swung part of its movement from folded to unfolded positions and illustrating more clearly the manner in which the one end frame passes through the other; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the hinges and the locking means for the respective sections which is connected with therespective leaves of the hinge.

In carrying out my invention I provlde two sections A and B, the former of which is of chair form, the latter, however, having but two legs, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

Section A comprises a bottom part 1, to the inner end of which legs 2 are secured, and at the outer end thereof the side standards 3 of an end frame at are secured. This frame extends above and below said bottom part, and the upper portion thereof serves as an end or armrest for the settee provided when the sections A and B are unfolded, as shown in Fig. 1. The lower portion of this frame serves as suitable supporting means, the standards 3 thereof constituting legs.

Fig. 2 is a view Section B comprises a bottom part 5,which is hinged by hinges 6 to the inner end of bottom 1, and an end frame 7. This frame is similar in construction to frame 4, the standards thereof, however, being arranged closer together, so as to be capable of arrangement between said standards 3 when the two frames A and B are in folded relation. (See Figs. 3 and 5.)

When the sections are folded, they form a chair, the bottoms 1 and 5 resting one on the other, and the rails 8 of section B form armrests. These rails 8 are carried by sections 9, and similar sections, as 10, are also secured to the under face of bottom 1, the rails 11 of sections 10alining with said rails 8 when the sections A and B are unfolded. thereby forming sides for the crib. (See Fig. 2.)

The hinges employed for joining the sections A-and B together comprise If-shaped leaves, as 12, which are pivoted together at 6, and to one of these leaves a catch 13 is pivoted, this catch having at an intermediate point a notch 1 1 for locking engagement with a U-shaped keeper 15 when the component chair-sections are unfolded, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The outer portion of each catch 13 is elongated, so as to always be held in its keeper 15. Therefore when the sections A and B are unfolded the notches let will always be held in proper position for locking engagement with said keepers 15. When it is desired to fold the sections A and B, the free portions of catches 13 are elevated and held so until section B is swung a short distance, thereby moving the keepers 15 to one side of the notches 1 1.

When the sections A and B are unfolded but not inverted, (see Fig. 1,) the bottom parts 1 and 5 aline, and a settee is thereby provided, the end frames of the respective sections forming the ends or arms thereof, as heretofore intimated, and as a back for the settee an open removable frame 16 is provided, the same having its ends provided with suitable keepers which slidably embrace the standards of the respective sections, the keepers at one end consisting of spaced-apart plates 17, which extend on opposite sides of standards 3. The keepers at the other end, however, consist merely of angle-plates 18, as I arrange this end of frame 16 at the outer side of the adjacent standard of end frame 7, thereby maintaining parallelism between the back of the settee and the adjacent edge of the bottom thereof, it being understood that the said standards of end frame 7 are arranged closer together than the standards 3.

By the construction heretofore described it will be observed that by providing the two sections A and B, the same being of the construction and arrangement set forth, I am enabled to provide a single chair, a settee, and a crib, the first being formed by arranging the two sections in folded relation, the settee being formed by the two sections when unfolded and the crib being provided by arranging the two sections in unfolded and inverted relation. Further, I provide the end frames 4 and 7 with ironing-board rests, which are in the form of rounds 18, and the ironing-board (indicated at 19) is preferably secured to one of these rounds by means of a pivoted catch 20, which is secured to one of the strips 21, secured to the under face of the ironing-board.

The construction of my improvement is extremely simple yet practical, and while the construction shown is capable of carrying out the various purposes of the invention I reserve the right to make such alterations and changes in the details of the construction as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is

1. A convertible chair consisting of two sections comprising bottom parts hinged together so as to be capable of being arranged one on the other, and end frames extending above and below said bottom parts, one of said end frames being movable through the other when said sections are folded together.

2. A convertible chair consisting of two sections comprising bottom parts hinged together, end frames secured to said sections and extending above and below the same, and a removable frame extending along one side edge of said section and being remo vably connected to said end frames.

3. Aconvertible chair consisting of two sections com prising bottom parts hinged together at one edge, end frames secured to said sections and extending above and below the same, and side sections secured to the first-named sections at the opposite side edges of said bottom parts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. A convertible chair consisting of two sections comprising bottom parts foldable one on the other, said bottom parts when unfolded alining to form a settee, and end frames extending above and below said bottom parts, the opposite sides of said bottom parts and said end frames when said sections are inverted forming a crib, and sides for the crib carried by said sections.

5. Aconvertiblechairconsisting of two sections comprising bottom parts hinged together, said sections when unfolded having their bottom parts alined, a pivoted catch carried by one section, a keeper secured to the other section for engagement by said catch, and end frames secured to said bottom parts and extending above and below the same, the

upper portions of said frames serving as arms when the sections are unfolded and the lower portions thereof forming supporting-legs.

6. A convertible chair consisting of'two sections, one of said sections comprising a bottom part provided at its inner end with legs and at its outer end with a frame which extends above and below said bottom part, the other section comprising a bottom part hinged to the inner end of the first-named bottom part, a frame secured to the outer end of the last-named section, said last-named frame fitting in the first-named frame when the sections are folded, and means for locking said sections in their unfolded position.
