JOSEPH KUGLER, OF VVAOONIA, MINNESOTA.
SURGICAL GXFPLIANCEl Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1905.
Application filed May l1, 1905. Serial No. 259,890.
My invention relates to surgical appliances or bandages, and more particularly to that class of bandages used in controlling the lower limbs ot' persons addicted to A"toeing in or walking in what is known in common parlance as pigeon-toed, one of the objects of said invention being to provide a device of the character described that shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, durable, etective in operation, and easy of adjustment.
Other objects and advantages of my invention, as well as the structural features by means of which these objects are attained, will be made clear by an examination of the specication, taken in connection with the accompanying' drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding portions throughout. and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a lower limb, showing my improved device attached and in operative position; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of said device detached.
l designates a strap, which may be made of any suitable material-elastic or inelastic, as desired. 2 designates a-buckle secured to one end of said strap, which is provided with holes 3 in its other end, by means of which the strap may be adjustably and removably secured in the vicinity of the knee to one of the limbs of the person upon which my said device is used, as shown in Fig. l. Removably and adjustably secured to said strap by a buckle 5 or by any other suitable means is a spiral or helical spring 6, which is secured at its lower end to a strap 7, said strap being similar to strap l, with the exception that it is somewhat shorter and is provided with a buckle 8 at one end and holes 9 at the other g end, so that said strap may be ad justably and removably secured to the leg in the vicinity of the ankle.
In operation the upper strap 1 is buckled around the limb near the knee, and the spiral or helical spring 6 is then wound spirally around the limb and as tightly as may be necessary, and the lower strap 7 is then buckled around the limb at or near the ankle. The upper strap l is so adjusted that the end of the spring secured thereto is either on the outside or the back ot' the limb, and the lower strap is so adjusted that the end of the spring is either on the outside or the front of the limb, so that the tension of the spring on the lower strap tends to turn the foot outward.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a device of the 'character described, a strap, a buckle carried thereby and by means of which said strap is adjusted and held in position, a second strap corresponding to the first-mentioned strap, a laterally-projecting strap secured to each of the above-mentioned straps, a buckle carried by each laterally-projecting strap,a coil-spring adapted to be wound around the limb, and a tongue carried by each end of the coil-spring and adapted to engage one of the buckles-carried by the laterallyprojecting straps whereby the spring may be adjusted and its tension loosened or tightened.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH KUGLER.
