SUSPENSORY BANDAGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,768, dated December 8, 1891.

Be it known that I, J OSEPHUS O. CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of \Vayne, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Suspensory Bandage; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in suspensory bandages; and it consists of the device hereinafter specified and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is aview in front elevation and perspective. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective.

The object of my invention is to provide an article of this class of superior efficiency, cleanliness, and utility.

I carry out my invention as follows: In the drawings, A represents a scrotum sack or bag, which I prefer to make from vulcanized rub ber, as this material is elastic, a non-conductor of heat and cold, and may also be readily cleaned. A suspensory made of rubber may be easily kept clean by simply sponging otf the same, as occasion requires. The bag is made, within the scope of my invention, with an opening, as shown at A, for the projection of the penis therefrom. The periphery or extremity of this opening I also prefer, for certain purposes, to make contractible,.in any suitable manner-as, for example, by turning the end of the projecting portion back upon itself and securing it thereto along its edge, thereby forming a piping, within which is placed a cord B, which can be tightened, as desired,the ends of the cord projecting through a hole in the piping. At the point of the opening the sack may project from the body thereof, if desired, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The

object of this feature of the device is intended to effectually prevent and overcome the liability of night emissions. \Vith the opening properly contracted it is evident that in case of erection during sleep the wearer will be awakened, and thereby said liability overcome. The sack is furthermore constructed, preferably, with folding portions, as shown at a, to make the same more extensible. These folds are preferably made something like a bellows fold, and may extend longitudinallyfrom a point just below the opening Adownwardly and rearwardly nearly to the rear of the sack. This construction of the sack causes the folds to lift the weight of the testicles, and thus relieve them, as when thesack is in place the rear portion is lifted up and the folds are caused to come at the bottom of the sack.

O and C denote bands extending from the lower portion of the sack, preferably also of rubber, for assisting in securing the sack in place.

D denotes the strap to fasten the device about the waist. The sack is madewith suitable extensions a, for the engagement of buckles D therewith for the attachment of the strap and bands thereto. A suspensory bandage so constructed has many ad vantages.

This device however is always smooth and soft and does not irritate or scratch the person, while, as already observed, the rubber bands 0 0, passing about the limb, as well as the sack, may be readily cleansed. The de vice supports the veins and keeps all excess of blood from running down into and bulging them out, and in so doing it tends to strengthen the muscles .of the vein-wall and keep the blood in them in proper circulation.

Other devices of this class furnish no compression, which is one of the chief objects and adaptations of my invention. By its use warmth of the parts is also secured. For

many cases, moreover, I contemplate the construction of a suspensory bandage and truss combined. To this end I suitably locate upon the upper portion of the sack, where a truss and bandage are both desired, suitable compressors F F, arranged to press upon the person, as required. The sack is constructed at its upper portion with an elastic band A to which the said compressors are secured. The truss-pads or compressors F F, being located on an elastic band, as of rubber, it is evident that they set easily upon the person without chafing, as where springs or other means are employed to exert compression of the pads. Moreover, the band intermediate the pads may be stretched to allow the pads to be located exactly where required or desired, and when so stretched the contractible nature of the band causes the pad to tit firmly in place. These compressors may be applied where desired. As shown, each compressor is held in place by a screw f, passed through a suitable plate f and the band A the band located between the plate and the compressor. The plate and compressor may be made of any suitable material, as of hard rubber. The sack A may be peforated, as at a if desired.

\Vhat I claim as my invention is In a combined suspensory bandage and truss, an india-rnbber scrotumsack A, provided with an elastic band A at its upper edge, an opening A near its upper portion, the edge of which is formed into a piping, a cord 13 within the piping, having ends projecting therefrom, for the purpose set forth, and folds a in the sack, extending longitudinally from near the opening and below the same to the rear of the sack, said sack having in combination therewith extensions a connected with the upper portion thereof at each side of the sack, rubber attaching-bands O 0', connected with the lower portion of the sack, buckles D, engaged with said extensions a to en gage said attaching-bands and strap, and truss-pads or compressors F F, located on the elastic band A between the extensions a, substantially as described.
