Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, GoT'rLInB KELLER, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lamp for electric lights, gas-lights, or other sources of light and arranged to shed a powerful but extremely soft light.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation of the improvement arranged as an electric lamp, parts being in section.
The improved lamp illustrated in the figure consists, essentially, of a globe A, made of glass or other suitable material and formed with an inner or lamp chamber A, into which extends an electric lamp C of any approved construction and connected by the usual wires D with a source of electricity, the upper end of the electric lamp C being provided with a cap E, held on the upper open end of the neck A of the globe A. The globe A is surrounded at its sides and bottom by a liquidchamber A, formed integrally on the globe, as plainly indicated in the drawing, and filled with water or other suitable liquid. The upper end of the chamber A is provided with a suitable filling-neck A* for filling the chamber with the liquid, the neck being normally closed by a stopper F.
The globe A and its liquid-chamber A are surrounded by a reflector G, so that the rays of light emanating from the electric light 0 pass through the liquid contained in the chamber A to then reach the inner reflecting-surface of the reflector G, which latter sends the diffused and soft rays of light in a downward direction to the part to be illuminated.
The upper end of the reflector G is connected by screws H with a yoke I, forming an integral part of a clamp I, engaging the neck A of the globe A directly below an annular head A, formed integrally on the neck. The screws H are engaged by the lower ends of chains 1 or other suitable means for supporting the lamp from a ceiling or other support.
It is expressly understood that the rays of light pass through the water or other liquid contained in the chamber A and hence the rays of light are difl'used so as to producea soft light, well adapted for reading or working purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A lamp, comprising a glass globe having a neck formed with an annular external bead near its outer end, said globe being formed with an integral liquid-chamber surrounding "its sides and bottom, the liquidchamber .being provided at its upper end with a laterally-projecting filling-neck, an electric lamp within the globe and provided with a cap secured to the neck of the globe, a clamp surrounding the neck of the globe below the bead thereof and provided with a depending yoke, areflector surrounding the globe and having its upper end projecting within the yoke of the clamp, the reflector being provided with an opening through which the filling-neck of the liquid-chamber projects, screws passing through the yoke into engagement with the reflector, and suspension-chains having their lower ends engaged by said screws, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A lamp, comprising a glass globe having an annular external bead near the outer end of its neck and formed with an integral liquid-chamber surrounding the sides and bottom of the globe, the liquid-chamber being provided at its upper end with a filling-neck, an electric lamp secured to the upper end of the neck of the globe and projecting into said globe, a yoke secured to the neck of the globe below the bead thereof, a reflector secured to the yoke and surrounding the globe, the reflector being provided with an opening through which projects the filling-neck of the liquid-chamber,and suspension-chains secured to the yoke, substantially as described.
3. A lamp, comprising a glass globe having a neck open at its outer end and'formed with an integral liquid-chamber surrounding the sides and bottom of the globe, an electric lamp secured to the upper end of the neck of the globe and extending through the neck into said globe, a yoke secured upon the neck of the globe, a reflector secured to the yoke ing the reflector to the yoke, and suspensionchains secured to the screws, substantially as described.
