Description

HENRY; HI-SE, (iF-CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
f Letters .Patent No. 79,978, dated July 14, 1.868.
IMPROVED TRACE-BUCKLE'.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCEPtN:
Be it known that I, HENRY IIISE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improved `Trace-Bucklle; Vand-I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form' part of this specification; v Y
My said invention relates to that class of lbuckles which are used to attach traces to harnesses; vaudit consists in constructing 4a buckle in two parts, one to be applied upon and secured to the end'of the trace, and
vthe other to bearrangcd upon the strap connected with the hannes or passing aroundthe breast of the horse,
so as to' slide upon scid strap, and to operate 'in connection with theirst-mentioned part, substantially as hereinafterfully set forth. Y 4 J l To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to make and use my said invention, I will proceed to describe thesame with particularity, making reference in so doing to the drawings hereinbefore mentioned, in whichl v i l Figure 1 represents a front view of said improvement.
- Figure 2 is avew of the reversed side vof tig. 1.
Figure 3 lis a side view of the buckle, and Figure 4 is a side central sectionl thereof. l Similar letters of reference in the different iguresdenote the same parts of my invention.
A represents the trace passing through a frame, E, t'o which the strap D is secured at d, as shown, said strap D being also provided with a loop, Z, to hold the trace down upon the strap as desired.
Upon thefpend oi" the trace is secured a metallic block Ao'r wedge-shaped piece, marked B, bylmeans of rivets b b, as shown, or in any other suitable manner.' p
Said metallic plate B is provided with inclined surfaces, or an inclined'surface a a, increasing thethickn-ess of the plate from the trace forward, as shown. l
C represents a clasp enclosing'the said block B and the strap D, and sliding upon the strap. as desired'. The Vthickness of-the plate B at they rear endof the inclines a, is so great that the clasp C cannot slide over the same,- and thus asrthe slide or clasp moves along forward or vback upon the strap, the end ofthe' trace is carried with it,'thus lengthening or shortening'the trace as desired, andthe draught upon the trace draws th inelines a into the clasp C so firmly as to prevent any slipping, thus'securely fastening the trace in place.
At the sume time holes may be made at suitable-intervals, elxtendingpart way or entirely through the strapv D, in-to which the pin'c, upon the inner face of the clasp C, may enter, so ns to prevent the possibility of the slipping of the trace, as shown in iig. 4.
vUpon the endof the plate B may be formed a knob, H, to aid in drawing the block forwurd,'so as to bring vthe neck witllin theclasp when it is desired to adjust' the trace..
The frameE has a'plute, F, which is provided with a pin`,'e, 'so that a strap, G, to passV beneath the horse, may be attached, as' shown, thus dispensingwith the back strap ordinarily used.
.By the above-described arrangement of the buckle B C, theV endof thetrace is secured, thus`dispensing with loops to retainthe hanging ends of the traee,.as seen vwithordinary buckles, while no holes are required to be ni'ade in the trace, to weaken the same, and the length can be adjusted with great nicety.
Having described the construction and operation ofmy invention', I -willproceed to specify what I claim and desire to secure 'by -Letters Patent. ,v
l. I claim the combination offtheplate B, provided withone or more inclines a, with a clasp Q, arranged and'operating substantially as set forth,Y andfoir the purposes specified. i
2. I fclaim a plate, B,'when constructed'so as to be secured upon a trace, and provided with oneor more inclines a, Iinthe manner described l i i y HENRY HISE.
