TO WHOM IT MAY CONCEIN:
Be it-known that I, BERNARD SMITH, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, and the Stateof Ohio, haveinvented,
a new and useful Improvement in Burial-Cases; anddo hereby declare theV following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates more particularly'-to those kind of burial casesfwhieh are of sheet metal, and my improycment consists in constructing them in such a manner that the flangeby which the bodyand lid are united Shallnot project outwardly farther than thc sides of the body, the upper part of the body Abeing set in for that purpose, thereby producing a very strong and .durable article, and one which is ne'at, compact, and tasteful in its appearance. i
In the 'accompanying' drawings Figure 1 is a perspective'view of thebody of` a coiiin.
Figure 2 represents a transverse section of the same, with the lidshown in position above the-body.
' A represents the body of a. codin, having lthe customery vsheet-mettiti sides B B', which may beeither vertical or inclined, as desired.
The sides B B, after extending,r a suicient distance above the bottom,` C, of the coiin, are inclined upward andV inward, as shown at b b.
The inclined portionb b of the sides, should slope inwardly a'distance equal to the width of the flange D, in order thattheouter edge of said flange may not'project beyond the sides B B' of the body.
This flange is provided with some threaded` apertures, d, for the reception of the screw by which the lid E is united to the body A of' the ease. y
The ange D d and the sides B Bf may be formed out, of a sin-lefpiece of sheet metal, or the former may be soldered to the latter, or, if preferred, it Acany be made of wrought or cast iron, and attached to the body of vthe coilin by means of screws, rivets, or bolts. v
By forming the sides B B', inclined portion b b', and flange D d, of a Single piece of metal, the body of Y' the case will be greatly strengthened, and it willl be seen that this mode of construction adds to theappearance of tbe article, besides which there is n'o projecting flange to be broken off when the coilins'are being transported.
I have described my improvement as appliedto a sheet-metal case, but it is evident that the same principle of construction can be adapted to other eoilins, whether of wood or cast metals.
I claim herein as new, and of my inventionl Constrixcting a burial-,case substantially in the-manner herein described, with the lchitergedge of the liange D flush, or nearly so, with the sides B B of a body, A, whose upper portion is set in, as andfor the objects designated.`
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand',
lBERNARD SMITH.
