Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EEIcE,9
WM. W. KNIGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT iN CHAMBER-BUCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,632, dated April 3, 1866; antedated March 23, i866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that l, WILLIAM W. KNIGHT, ot' Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented aCombined Night-Stool and Slop-Gan; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description otthe saine, ret'- erence being` had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters ot reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of a seat with a plate adapted to and combined with a slop-can in the manner described hereinafter, so that the can may be used as a convenient night-stool, and so that the seat can be removed and replaced by a cover, which et't'ectually prevents the contents of the can from tainting the surrounding air.
In order to enable others to make my invention, l will now proceed to describe the manner ot' constructing' the saine.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specilication, Figures l and 2 are sectional views of my iinproved slop-can and nightstool.
A represents the body of a slop-can ot' the usual form, there being' near the upper edge two plates, a, to which is connected the ordinary bail or handle.
Within the can and at a short distance from the upper edge of the same is an annular strip, b, the lower edge ot' which is soldered or otherwise secured to the can, and between the latter and the strip is an annular space for the reception of a supplyT ot' water, into which passes the annular rib d of the cover B, so that there can be no possibility of the eftluvia from the contents of the can escaping' to the external air.
When the can has to be used as a nightstool, the cover B is removed and the seat shown in Fig. 2is applied. This seat consists of a circular piece, I), of wood, having a suitable opening', and to the under side ot' this wood is secured the horizontal portion ot' the annular plate E, which rests on the top ot the can, the vertical portion ot' this plate projecting downward into the can. Vhile this vertical portion ot` the plate E serves to retain the scat in its proper position on the can it protects the an nular water-space above alluded to, and the edges ot' the opening' in the cover so far overhang the vertical portion ot' the plate that the latter cannot become soiled.
Vhen a further use ofthe scat becomes unnecessary it is removed and the cover B applied, Which eft'ectually prevents the contents ofthe can from tainting the air surrounding it.
It will be seen Wit-hout further description that the above-described utensil is especially applicable to hospitals, where the necessities ot' patients are apt to prevent the preservation of cleanliness and to taint the air.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent The seat D, with its plate E, adapted to and combined with the slop-cau A and its plate b, in the manner described.
In testimony whereot'I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence ot' two subscribing` witnesses.
NVM. WV. KNIGHT,
Witnesses:
MARY JANE HAEAN, SAME. B. OGILBE.
