To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HANS NInLs EN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Lap -Robe and Foot-Protector; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved lap-robe and foot-protector; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, with some parts broken away and with some parts sectioned, showing my improved lap-robe and footprotector and a portion of a seat to which it is applied or in connection with which it is used. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the improved device. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line .1 in of Fig. 2.

The numeral 1 indicates a carriage or wagon seat having a cushion 2, and the numeral 3 indicates, principally by dotted lines, the feet and legs of a person seated on the cushion 2.

The numerala indicates a base-board, preferably formed of wood and provided with an air-space 5. Running around the edge of this footboard 4 is a vertically-projecting jointstrip 6 of light metal, stifl' leather, or other suitable material. Secured to the edge of the footboard 4 and projecting outward from the joint-strip 6 are rigidly-secured buttons 7.

The numeral S-indicates amain robe which at its lower edge is provided with buttonholes 7, that are adapted to detachably secure the lower edge of said robe to the front and two sides of the footboard 4 outside of the jointstrip 6. This main robe 8 may be constructed of leather, leatherette, rubber-cloth, or any other suitable material, but is preferably flexible and provided with a lining 8, the lower edge of which is loose and adapted to engage the inner surface of the joint-strip 6,

as shown in Fig. 1, and to thereby form a more nearly air-tight joint with the footboard than would otherwise be provided.

The back portion of the device from the seat down to the footboard is filled in by a detachable supplemental robe-section 9, which at its lower edge is detachably secured to the footboard at in the same manner as the main robe 8 and at its side edges is detachably secured between the vertical edges of the main robe 8 and the loose edge of its lining by means of buttons 10 and buttonholes 11. The upper edge of the supplemental robe-section 9 is loose and is adapted to be placed under the cushion 2, as shown in Fig. l, or to be turned downward and hung loose. The upper edge of the main robe 8 is long enough to extend up over the legs and around the body.

In Fig. 1 the main robe 8 is shown as if it assumed a rigid full-opened position; but in practice it will of course fall more closely around the legs and around the body.

The robe constructed as above described closely incloses the feet and the legs, and when a warming-stone or other device for radiating heat is placed therein means is provided for keeping the feet and legs warm in the most severe weather.

The said device, it will be understood, is capable of modification within the scope of my invention as herein set forth and claimed.

WV hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:

1. A device of the character described comprising a rigid footboard provided with an air-space and pliable robes detachably secured thereto and to each other, and forming an inclosure into which the feet and legs may be inserted, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a footboard 4 having a marginal joint-strip 6, of a main robe-section 8 and a supplemental robe-section 9, said two robe-sections having means for detachably securing them together and to the joint-strip 6 of said footboard, substantially as described.
