DRAW-BAR-CENTERING DEVICE FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
No. '798,1 1o.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1905.
Application tiled June 5, 1905. Serial No. 263,727.
To all 'wh/0711l it mm1/y concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bar-Centering Devices forRailway-Cars, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to draw-bar-centering devices for railway-cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a draw-bar-centering device of a strong, simple, efficient, and durable construction and adapted to be adjusted to different positions to compensate i'or wear and to accommodate drawbars of different widths or thicknesses.
My invention consists, in connection with the draw-bar, of a pair of draw-bar-centering arms or wings, secured to a pair of torsional rods, mounted upon arms or projections, with which the side plates or stop-castings of the draft-rigging are furnished, and which torsional rods are provided at their rear ends with ad justing-segments furnished with a plurality of holes for setting' the draw-bar-centering arms or wings in diierent positions, as may be required.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specification, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in vertical section, of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectionv on line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A represents the center sills, A the front or end sill, A2 the buerblock, A3 the carry-iron, and A4 the drafttimbers, of a car-frame to which my invention is applied;
B is the draw-head, B' the draw-bar, B2 the draw-bar strap or yoke, C c C c' tandem-arranged springs, D D the side plates or stopcastings, and E E E2 E3 the followers, of the draft-rigging.
All the above-named parts may be of any suitable or desired construction.
F F are a pair of draw-bar-centering arms or wings, each preferably of cast metal and having a rounded head or facef, adapted to bear against the vertical sides or faces of the draw-bar. Each of these centering arms or wings F is secured to a torsional rod Gr and is furnished with a pivot portion f, iitting in a rounded socket or bearing d in a downwardlyextending bracket, arm, or extension D', either integral with or separately attached to the side plate or stop-casting D. The bracket or eXtension D of the side plate or stop-casting is also furnished with a lip or shoulder d2, which serves as a stop to limit the downward movement of the draw-bar-centering arm or wing F. Each ofthe torsional rods G is provided at its rear arm with an adjusting-segment G, furnished with a series of holes g, so that the torsional rod may be regulated or adjusted as required by setting the segment G in different positions by means of the pin g, which is furnished with a key g2. Each of the side plates or stop-castings D is provided with a bracket or arm D2, either integral with or separately attached to the casting at its rear end, through which the torsional rod Gr extends. The torsion-rod G is furnished at each end with 'keys g3 g3 to keep the same in place.
-The side plates or stop-castings D are furnished with recesses or cavities Z3 to receive the centering arm or wing F.
I claim- 1. In a draw-bar-centering device, the combination with a draw-bar, and side plates or stop-castings furnished with downwardlyprojecting arms or brackets, of draw-barcentering arms or wings pivotally mounted in said arms or brackets, and torsion-rods to which saidcentering arms or wings are secured, substantially as specified.
2. In a draw-bar-centering device, the combination with a draw-bar, and side plates or stop-castings furnished with downwardlyprojecting arms or brackets, of draw-barcentering arms or wings pivotally mounted in said arms or brackets, and torsion-rods to which said centering arms or wings are secured, and adjusting-segments secured to the other ends of said torsion-rods, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with the draw-bar, of
torsion-rods extending parallel to the drawposite ends of said torsion-rods from the bm', and centermg-arms Secured to szud tor'- eentermg-arms for adjusting the sanne, subsion-rods, substantially as specited. stantially as speclled.
4. The combination with the draw-bar, of JOHN F. OCONNOR. 5 torsion-rods extending parallel to the draw- Vtnesses:
bar, and centering-arms secured to said tor- H. M. MUNDAY,
sion-rods, and segments Secured to the op- P. ABRAMS.
