PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MOE. AMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN OAR & FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
DRAW-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,132, dated November 24, 1903. Application filed October 12, 1903. Serial No. 176,776. (No model.)
zen of the United States, residing at New York,
State-of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved draw-bar, showing the same in position on a car; and Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the parts detached.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in draw-bars, being designed particularly as an improvement in the pivotal connection of the drawbar to the draftsprings, whereby the draw-bar is capable of movement in a lateral direction to accommodate itself in the rounding of curves without throwing the draft-springs and their encircling yoke out of their designed position.
In the drawings I have illustrated an ordinary car underframing,in which the draftplates have the usual abutments for followerplates, the draft springs cooperating with said follower-plates being shown in tandem.
1 is a draw-bar having the usual head, and to this head is secured a saddle-block 2, forming the chafing or wear surface for a pivoted follower-abutment 3. The socketed saddle 2 is secured in position by bolts or rivets 4 to the rear end of the draw-bar, and these bolts or rivets are also employed to secure in position plates o, which overhang the rear face of the saddle. Instead of separate plates the saddle could be provided with integral extensions answering the same purpose. ,The rear ends of these plates receive a pivot-bolt 6, which pivot-bolt passes through the followerabutment 3, which is shown in Fig. 2, and is formed with an elongated opening 7 to receive the pivot-bolt.
8 indicates the yoke, whose free ends are provided with elongated openings corresponding to the opening in the block 3, said free ends being arranged above and below said block, as shown in Fig. 1. 7
By this construction it will be observed that the block 3 and yoke 8 have a slight independent movement. The draw-bar is pivoted on the bolt 6 and may swing laterally without disturbing the relation between the yoke and draft-springs and their associate parts.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a draw-bar, of a saddle arranged on the rear end thereof, the faceof said saddle being provided with a socket, and the follower-abutment received in said socket; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a draw-bar, of a saddle-block provided with a socket in its rear face, extensions above and below said socket, a pivot-bolt in said extensions, a yoke and a follower-abutment connected to said pivot-bolt; substantially as described.
The combination with ayoke, of a block 3 arranged between the free ends thereof, said block and yoke having elongated openings, a pivot-bolt passing through said openings, a socketed saddle for cooperating with the block 3, a draw-bar, and means on the draw-bar engaging the pivot-bolt; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of October, 1903.
JOHN MOE. AMES.
