Be it known that fl, ALBER'I Dn tlai'n'r Cnad Mas, a citizen ot' the United States ol America, and a resident o'l" Chicago, in the county ot' @ook and State oi Illinois, have invented certain new and useful linin'ovements in Envelops, et which the following is a specification.
rlhe main object o1 my invention is to provide an improved form of envelop adapted tor securely retaining' its contents and at the saine time permitting' ol" being,l readily opened ior inspection otl the contents by the postal authorities. lf accomplish this object by the device shown in the accompanying' drawings, in whichn Figure 1 shows a torni ot' blank sheet ot' suitable torni 'for making` envelops according; to my invention. ln the term shown in the drawings the envelop-blank is substantially rectangular in term, but having' its lower corners cut away to 'form a bottom 'llap 8 and side tlaps 9 and 10. '.llhe size ot the envelop is determined by the lolds alongv the lines 11, 1Q, 13, and lll. 'lhe 'lolds 11 and 12 are parallel to each other and are located suliiciently inward o'l,E the side edges of the sheet to allow the llaps 9 and .l0 to overlap. The tolds 13 and 14 are parallel to each other and at right angles to the tolds 11 and 12. Cuts 15 extend in opposite directions from the points ot intersection oi. the crease la with the creases 11 and 12 and toward the upper edge ol the blank to ferm parts 16, extending'laterally o1l the creases 11 and 12, thus forming` a central iiap 17 and two side 'Flaps 18, the side ilaps 18 beine' secured together when the side :flaps 9 and 10 are folded upon the body part et the envelop and tastened together, as shown in Fig'. 3. lt will be seen that the envelop now has at its upper end two opposed Vflaps .17 and 18 and that one ot' said llaps is considerably narrower than the other, which other llap is provided with parts 16, extending' beyond the side edges et' the envelop. The gunnnil'lg ot' the envelop is indicated by shaded lines, the dotted lines being used to indicate the gummine' on the reverse tace olI the blank.
'.llo close the envelop, the iiaps 17 and 18 are lirst together lolded on the crease 19, which is parallel to the crease let and lies between the saine and the ends ot' the l'laps. The flaps are ifolded toward the side of the wide 'lap 18, the narrow llap 1T beii'lg outside. The 'llaps are then again folded in the same direction, this` time on the line 21st, and the parts 16 are then turned over the side edges ol the envelop and secured upon the opposite tace ol the saine, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6.
1t' preferred, the envelops may be deliv ered to the trade with the iirst told in the Hap pasted together, as indicated in Fig. 1, thus eliminating' all possible doubts that the user might otherwise have as to the method ot 'folding the l'lapS. ,lo close the envelop when the saine is in this t'orln, it is only neeessary to Fold the ilap 17 over the top ot the folded Ilap 18, then make a second told on the line 141 and paste down the i'lap 1b', as betere described. tiince the flap 18 is secured to the body et the envelop only at its ends and at the told let along the upper end of the envelop, it becomes a keeper ot greater rigidity than the body part ol the envelop, having` its upper edge integral with said body and .formingl a pocket opening' away from the upper edge oi' the envelop and adapted to receive the llap 17 when said liap is closed and turned back into the pocket. The envelop may be readily opened Yfor inspection by withdrawing' the liap lj? :troni the pocket, and when said `l'lap is returned to the pocket after the inspection the closure is as secure as when it was Iirst inade. lhe llap 18 being' lirst folded upon itseltl and then upon the adjacent face olf the envelop and having' its extensions 16 pasted down on the opposite tace ot' the envelop, 'forms a reinforcing strip or band stitler than the envelop, extending' along one side ol the oifienkedge oil? the envelop and having' its ends bent around the side edges ot' the envelop and secured on the opposite face thereof.
'lhe blank shown in Fig'. 2 diliers trom that 18 eon'ipleted and the two part-s ot' said tiap shown in Fig. 1 in having' the cuts 15 diverging from the intersections of the fold 14 with the folds 11 and 12 instead of converging from said points, and the parts 16 are so shaped as to beof sing'le thickness in the complete envelop. It is preferred to make narrow flap 17 slightly shorter than the flap 18, as indicated in the drawings.
The feature of forming a pocket along' the open edge of the envelop is not broadly claimed herein, but is more fully described and claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 219,082, tiled August 1, 1904.
The operation of the device shown will be readily understood from the foregoing' description.
It will be seen that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an article of manufacture, an envelop having a iiap at each side of its open edge, one of said iiaps having parts extending beyond the side edges of the envelop, said extended iiap being folded upon itself on a line sulstantially parallel With the open edge (of the envelop and being then folded against the body of the envelop along said open edge and having' its extended parts folded around the side edges of the envelop and secured on the opposite face thereof, said extended flap thus forming a pocket along the open edge of the envelop on the side opposite the other flap, said pocket open outward and facing' away from said open edge and being' adapted to receive said other flap when folded over said extended flap and turned back into the pocket, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, an envelop having a flap at each side of its open edge, one of said flaps having parts extending' beyond the side edges of the envelop and said parts being adapted to extend around the side edges of the envelop When said iiaps have been folded upon each other` and then together folded against the body of the envelop on the face thereof which has the extended iiap, said parts being gummed on the face which is adjacent to the body of the envelop when said parts are in their folded positions, and the other iiap being adapted to be Withdrawn from engagement with the extended iiap without unfoldingsaid extended flap, substantially as described.
3. As an article of manufacture, an envelop having' a flap at its open edge, and having a strip secured along its open edge on the side opposite the iap to form a pocket opening outward and facing away from said open edge and adapted to receive said flap when closed and turned back into the pocket, the ends of said strip being folded around the side edges of the envelop and secured on the opposite face thereof, and said flap being adapted to be withdrawn from the pocket Without disturbing the ends of said strip, substantially as described.

As an article of manufacture, an envelopblank comprising a rectangular body part,hav ing an end flap and having' side flaps adapted to overlap each other when folded against the body part, said side aps being extended beyond the end of the body part to form, When folded, a second flap opposed to said end iiap, and said blank being so cut that one of said opposed end flaps will extend laterally beyond the side edges of the body part, substantially as described.
