CORRUGATED-PAPER BOX OR OTHER CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application led .Tune 21, 1917. Serial No. 176,011.
' 0 all whom, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. CnowELL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Corrugated-Paper Boxes or other Containers, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms partof the same This invention relates especially to the closing and sealing of corrugated paper boxes or other generally similar containers by which their end flaps are strongly and reliably held together and 'secured in place inconnection w-ith the sides of the container.
I For this purpose the usual outer seam bedesir tween the substantially meeting edges of the outer pairs of end flaps may be sealed by an inner sealing strip of gummed paper or cloth tape or other adhesive material which may be secured along the inner face of this seam next the end of the container, this strip preferably having its ends doubled back over the outer faces of this flap seam so as to form locking ends securing the flaps still more strongly yat their edges so that tearing cannot so readily start at these points. An outer sealing strip may also be advantageouslyused and such a strip of similar adhesive material which is preferably somewhat wider than the inner sealing strip may be pasted and rubbed down along the outer face of this flap seam `so as to hold the same together and reinforce the doubled back lockin ends of the inner sealing strip, if It is advantageous to have this outer sealin strip formed with projecting securing en s which adhesively engage the adjacent sides of the container so as to hold the end flaps securely thereto.
In the accompanying drawing showing in a somewhat diagrammatic way an illustrative embodiment of this invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a partlyclosed container of which portions have been broken away for greater clearness.
Fig. 2 1s another perspective vlew thereof when the container has been still further closed and sealed.
Fig. 3 is a partial transverse section through the container substantially along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. -1 is another similar partial section taken along the line of Fig. 2.
The container formed of pasteboard or corrugated paper box board may be of any suitable type and construction and provided with meeting or overlapping pairs of end flaps of any suitable description. As indicated the container may be formed of corrugatedbox board having the sides 1 and the'V connected end { iaps 3, 4 separated by the usual slots or cut-out portions 15. 'It is desirable to reinforce the creased or scored folding edges of such a container by applying to the corrugated paper box board blank suitable inner reinforcing strips, such as l0, 11 of strong glunlned paper or cloth tape which may be adhesively secured to these folding edges or creased seams at any stage of the manufacturing operation. IIn this way by using, for instance, GO or 90 pound Kraft paper-tape-the ordinary corrugated box board may be so reinforced along the folding edges of the blank so that the usual creased seam at this point is suiciently strengthened to have substantially or fully the strength of-the body of the blank. If desired, the reinforcing strips 10 extending around the seam between the sides of the box blank and the connected end flaps thereof may first be put in place and then the other inner reinforcing strips 11 may be applied, although of course this order may be reversed if more convenient. A similar inner reinforcing strip 20 of gummed paper or cloth tape may be applied to the side seam edges 13 and 18 of the blank at any desired stage of its manufacture and the outer connecting strip 14 preferably of gulnmed cloth tape may close this side seam on the outside. These inner reinforcing strips 11 may in adhesively securing them to the blank be forced into the creased or sc ored folding edge of the blank at the point 12 in some cases and are also advantageous in preventingany leakage of the contents of thel container into these folding edges in addition to their important strengthening action. The use of such inner reinforcing strips which is described and claimed in my copending application is not, however, necessary in all cases, although highly desirable Where the container is formed of corrugated paper box board.
In closing the end iaps of the container the inner fiaps 4c may be folded together as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 so that their substantially meeting and abutting edges may form a flap seam, such as 9. The outer end flaps 2, 3 may then be folded together so as to form between their preferably meeting and abutting edges a substantially closed outer flap seam 8. These flaps may be advantageously connected by the use of sealing strips of gummed paper or cloth tape and an inner sealing strip may be advantageously applied and secured to the outer pair of end iiaps as they are being closed together. For this purpose the inner sealing strip 5 may have its upper gumlned surface rendered adhesive as by moistening the same 'and may be laid in position before the end flaps 2 and 3 are folded together and down upon this sealing strip which is thus adhesively secured thereto. It is also desirable to have this inner sealing strip formed with projecting ends', such as 6, 7, which may then be advantageously folded or doubled back over the outer surfaces of these end liaps so as to be adhesively secured thereto and constitute locking ends which still more strongly hold the end flaps together at either end of the seam and thus prevent the tearing or parting of these flaps which usually starts at these points.
Although not necessary in all cases it is desirable to also use an outer sealing strip which may advantageously be a widerstrip of gummed paper or. cloth tape 17 which may be applied to the outer ap seam after its gummed lower surface has been moistened and rendered adhesive so that it can be adhesively secured and rubbed down upon this flap seam and the locking ends of the inner sealing strip as indicated in Fig. 2. This outer sealing strip is preferably provided with projecting securing ends 16 which may be folded down and adhesively secured to the adjacent sides 1 of the container as indicated so as to strongly and securely hold the adjacent portions of the end flaps in proper coperation therewith. These sealin strips may of course be readily moistened y any sultable or usual moistening machines and may be applied and smoothed -or rubbed down by the operators during the preliminary closing of the end flaps at one end of the container as indicated in Fig. 1 when this endof the container may of course be supported by a. form or support located within it. And after being filled the end flaps at the other end of the container or package may be closed and sealed as above described, so that a strong package is secured which has the additional protection against tampering which is provided by the inner sealing stri with its locking ends which form additional safeguards againstV lopening or tampering with the package in such a way as not to be instantly apparent.
This invention has been described in connection with a. number of illustrative forms, proportions, shapes, sizes, materials, arrangements, parts and methods of manufacture and use, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited, since what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
