W/TNESSS A TORNEYS JULIUS ELIESAR LOWY, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y.
CARTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
Application filed January 4,1918. Serial No; 210,349.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULrUs E. Lowr, a subject of the Emperor of Austria (first naturalization papers having been obtained), and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Carton, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a 4carton or container for breakfast foods, grains or the like, and it has for its general object to provide a carton formed with a dispensing opening in its top so that the contents can be poured out, there being a novel fiap or cover to normally close the opening and keep the contents in a sanitary condition.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a collapsible container having a novel arrangement of apertured or recessed flaps which coact to produce the dispensing opening and one of the flaps being provided with a foldable tongue to form the closure for the dispensing opening.
With such objects in view, and Vothers which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawin which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the carton, showing the closure for the dispensing opening in open position;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the closure in closed position; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the carton is made, the same being drawn on a reduced scale.
Referring to the drawing,
' a carton which may be of the foldable type,
- and at the top is a dispensing opening 1 which is arranged in the topsurface and the side face 2. This arrangementl of the opening permits of a ready outiow of the contents when the box is inverted. The opening 1 is adapted to be closed by a folding'or hinged lap or cover element 3 which 4 two portions A designatesis an integral art of the top of the carton and is in the forni of a tongue which is in 1 and 5 connected by a folding crease or hinge 6. This closure is connected with the top bv a crease or hinge 7 The hinge 6 is so located that the portion 5 will cover that part of the opening 1 which lies in the top of the carton, and theportion 1 of the closure, which is a tapering tongue, will cover that part of the opening 1 which lies in the side 2. The tongue portion 1 is adapted to slip into a pocket 8 in the side 2 of the carton and is frictionally held therein, as shown in Fig. 3. When the carton is filled by the manufacturer a label or equivalent means will seal the closing element down, the label having directions as to where it 'should be broken to permit access to the dispensing opening and closure.
In the top a slit 9 is provided adjacent the opening 1 so that the tip of the tongue portion 4 of the closure can be engaged in this slot s0 as to prop the closure open, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By swinging the propped-open closure to the right in Fig. 1 the tip 10 of the closure can be pulled out of the slot 9 for permitting the closure to be adjusted to closed position, as shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the blank shown in Fig. 1, the body is made up of five sections 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, which fold on the line 16, and the sections 11 and 15 overlap each other and are pasted together so that a four-sided body is formed. Integral with the sections 11, 12, 13, 14 are the usual overlapping bottom iaps 17, and integrally connected with the sections 12, 13, 14 and 15 are the top flaps 18, 19,20, 21. r1`he closure 3 is integral with the flap 18 and the iaps 20 and 21 are cutout at 22 and 23 so that when the top is slit these cut-out portions will register to form the dispensing opening 1, and the same flaps 20 and 21 Ahave apertures 24 and 25 which register to form the slot 9. 1n the top edge of the end flap 11 of the blank Ais a recess 26 which is larger than that portion of the opening 23 of the blank lyingbelow the fold 27, so that the mouth of the pocket 8 will be formed of two lips 28 and 29, Fig. 1, which do not register, and consequently the tip of the closure can be more easily engaged in the pocket 8.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and from the fold to the free edge,
4method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and While I have described the principle of operation, together with the device Which I noW consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the' scope of the appended claims.
Having thusA described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A container having a dispensing opening and a slot adjacent the opening, and a closure hinged to the side of the container having the opening and slot, with the slot between the opening and the point of hinge connection, said closure being folded on a line parallel With the hinge and tapered whereby the free edge can enter the slot to hold the vclosure in open position, and a pocket in the container at the side of the opening opposite from the hinge of the closure, whereby the tapered end of the closure can enter the pocket to hold the closure in closed position.
2. A container having a dispensing open"- ing, a closure hinged to the face of the ,coni tainer having the opening, and means between the opening and the hinge of the closure for receiving the free edge of the closure when the latter is doubled, whereby the closure is held in open position.
3. A container having a dispensing opening and a slot in the face containing the opening, a iap having one portion glued to the face having the opening and another portion free from the s aid face to form a closure for the opening, the free portion of the flap being tapered to engage in the y said slot for holding the closure in open position, and a poche; in the container at the side of the openlng opposite from said slot, to receive the tapered end of the closure for holding the same in closed position.
