This invention relates to improvements in containers constructed of paper for holding and for dispensing dry flowable materials such as cereals, the invention also pertaining to the form of the blank from which a container is created.

An important object is to create a blank of a single part so produced as to include an integral portion on a flap of one of the parts or sides of a. container to serve as a closure for said container.

Another object is the provision of a pouring opening in one of the walls of the container adjacent an adjoining wall, while providing on said adjoining wall a. closure adapted to cover said opening.

Still another object is to create an opening at the juncture of two of the walls of a container for discharge therethrough the contained commodity while providing on one of the walls at said opening an integral closure for the latter.

In addition, other objects will appear in the following description aided by the accompanying drawing forming part hereof.

Figure 1 is a plan of a blank in a complete whole for forming a container according to the invention.

Figure 2 shows a container in perspective during the process of folding the blank shown in Figure l, but produced on a small scale.

Figure 3 illustrates part of the container in perspective which includes a certain structure as part of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is also a perspective of the part of the box shown in Figure 3 with a closure lapped upon a side of the container.

Figure 5 is a plan in part section illustrating partsv appearing in Figures 2 and 3.

Figure 6 is a side elevation in section of partof the container showing parts illustrated in Figu'res 3 and 5.

Figure '7 is an elevation of part of the container illustrating parts appearing in Figure 3,

Figure 8 is an elevation in part section of part of the container in a slightly modified arrangement.

The main purpose herein is to provide a container of folded form which while furnishing any usual six sided type combines therewith on its top side an integral portion which may act as a closure for an opening created in an adjoining side, said closure forming a tight seal for said opening to exclude moisture, but which may be readily torn away, partially, to expose the opening for dispensing a commodity while yet .2 remain as part of the whole for covering said opening while the container still contains such commodity, as in the home for example.

A further purpose is that of providing an opening in the container wall from which to readily dispense a held commodity but always tightly sealed during storage of such container, and to provide a closure as an integral part of the latter, to provide such sealing while usable as a closure after unsealing.

In'Figure 1 the blank from which the container is formed, the observer views the surface that constitutes the inner surface of such container. Said blank includes the portions i and 2 as opposite broader sides of such container, together with the two narrower sides 3 and l, the former, 3, constituting what may be termed the front side which connects the said portions I and 2, while the latter, I, terminates the portion I at an edge thereof, and which has a flap 5 which overlaps an edge of the side 2 as appears in Figure 2. Terminating the ends of the portions i and 2 are flaps 6', ii and l, and a flap 1' terminates the lower end of the side 3, while flaps 6, I terminate the ends of the portion 4, the several flaps constituting the top and bottom walls of the container when folded.

In said Figure 1 the broken lines 8 indicate the score lines as the lines along which th several described portions are folded in forming the container, whereas the continuous lines 9 are the lines of severance for certain of the several portions named, as provided by the usual cutting dies, not shown.

It is now to be observed that at I0 is a portion which is part of the top portion 6' foldable along the score line 8', this said portion lil being also a part of the top portion 6 of the blank and severed therefrom on the line H. Preferably, also, this line of severance extends into the narrow side 3, a severance occurring along line I2 lying at right angles to score lines 8 of said side 3 and terminating at the score line B. By thus extending into the side 3 a tab I0 is created on said portion l0, its counterpart ill lying opposite thereto, these tabs being created along the score lines l3 and along which they are foldabie for a purpose to appear.

In thus extending the portion i0 into the portion 6 and the portion 3, two distinct advantages are gained in the container in its folded form, as will be seen in Figures 2, 4, 6 and 7 particularly. The front side 3, since the tab Ill is cut therefrom thus has an opening l4 communicating with the inner space of the container as a dmxed t the sides I and 2.

l0 and its said counterpart may overlie the sides I and 2 as suggested at H! in Figure 4, wherein the portion HI is shown folded down upon the side 3 to act as a closure for said opening it. Also, by extending the portion Ill into theportion 5 an opening I5 is created, see Figures 1, 2 and 5, which communicates with the said inner space of said container, and also with said opening H, the two openings l5 and It providing a wide pouring opening, both closed in the completely folded container by said closure portion 33. Said portion l0, when the container is closed and sealed, is itself sealed in any usual manner by the use of an adherent applied particularly to the tabs l0, Ill by which they are In opening the container to pour its contents the portion I 0 is raised and torn from the tabs along the score lines I3 thus exposing said contents, and if it is desired to remove said portion from its place entirely, it ma b torn along the score line l6 shown in Figures 1, 22nd 4.

In addition to the structure described the front side 3 may be severed in two places, for example, by diagonal lines as in Figures 1, 2 and 7 to provide the segments l8, I9, 20 which remain parts of said front sides. These may be swung outwardly or inwardly out of the plane of said side as suggested in Figure 5. When outwardly swung as in Figure 3, for example, a strip of flexible material 2| may be made to adhere to the segments, and the extremities of the strip may, if desired, be afllxed to the sides I and 2 as in Figure 5, said strip serving as a hinglng part to permit the whole to move to extreme positions.

It is observed that the segments lie in partially spaced relation and are so maintained by the strip 2 I, the latter yielding between the segments as the structure swings past the plane of the side I as it moves into or out of the container, said structure, in other words accommodating itself to the width of the space between the sides I and 2 at the front wall position without bulging said sides I and 2. When swung inwardly the described parts, of course, permit the portion III to lie flat upon said side 3. When said portion is raised, however, the described structure may be swung outwardly to form a convenient pouring spout. A structure having a pouring spout forms the subject of a pending patent application filed in the U. S. Patent Omce by the present applicant, Robert B. Cartwright, June 28, 1947, under Ser. No. 757,702, the present spout structure being an improvement thereover.

As shown in Figure 8 the front side 3' of the container may not include the spout structure just described but still use the opening I4 corresponding to II in the earlier figures. In said figure the characters 3', 6 I0 I! and I5 correspond to the parts 3, 6 IO, N and I5 respectively.

That the folding of the blank of Figure 1 so that it appears as in Figure 2 it may be stated the portion 2, as viewed, is brought toward the observer and then carried to the left over the balance of the structure whereupon the flap 5, provided with suitable adhesive, is lapped upon the free edge of said portion 2, the several'portions 8, 6', 6, and I, 1', I, as the closures for the top and bottom of the container, being then folded to their positions.

By the structure shown and described it is seen that a top portion of the container is in effect extended at one of its narrower ends to form a portion to beoverlapped upon one of the sides of such container, and that a commodity dispensing opening is covered by the same as a novel arrangement and for a new purpose as distinguished from anything in the known art.

Nothing in the structure will interfere with thepresent day method of introducing a waxed paper insert by machinery for providing a moisture proof lining, and the container has an advantage, so constructed, 'in that a permanent closure is provided as an integral part the die-cut blank from which said container is formed, while also providing for free dispensing through a large outlet and including a pouring spout at said outlet, if desired.

I claim:

1. -A blank from which to form a container including side sections, a front and a back section, all of the sections being connected at fold lines between them, a flap at each of opposite ends of the side sections, and a flap at each end of the back section, the several flaps constituting the top and bottom portions of the container to be formed, and said flaps being severed from each other in line with the fold lines of the named sections, and a portion extending from one of the flaps of one of the side sections directed toward and into the adjacent companion fiap of the other side section and terminating beyond the fold line between said other side section and the front section and severed from said companion flap, said portion at one edge thereof having a tab extending in a lateral direction into the front section and severed therefrom, and said portion being foldable upon the said front section in the formed container.

2. The invention recited in claim 1 wherein the front section is severed at two spaced positions at the severance line of the named portion, the severances diverging from said severance line toward the opposite end of the section and toward and terminating at the fold lines of that section where connected with the side sections.

3. A blank from which to form a container including side sections and a front, and a back section, all of said sections being connected along fold lines lying between them, a flap at one end of one of the side sections adapted to fold along a fold line lying at right angles to the said fold lines between the named sections, a portion on and extending from the flap in a direction paralleling its fold line and terminating beyond the position of the front section and beyond the fold line be tween said front section and the other of the named side sections, and a tab extending laterally from said portion, said tab being part of and severed from said front section along a line paralleling but spaced from the said fold line of said flap.

A blank from which to form a container including side sections and a front and a back section, all of said sections being connected along fold lines lying between them, a flap at one end of one of the side sections, adapted to fold along a fold line lying at right angles to the said fold lines between the named sections. a portion on and extending from the flap in a direction paralleling its fold line and terminating beyond the position of the front section and beyond the fold line between said front section and the other of the named side sections, and a tab extendin laterally from said portion, said tab being part of and severed from said front section along a line paralleling but spaced from the said fold line of said flap, and a tab extending laterally 5. A blank from which to form a container including side sections and a front and a back section connected along fold lines lying between them, a flap at each end of the back section, and a flap at each end of each side section, the flap on one of the side sections at one end thereof projecting beyond, and being separate from the front section, and extending beyond the fold line between the said front section and the other of the side sections, said flap having a laterally extending tab at each of two opposite edges, one of said tabs being a part of the front section but severed therefrom, said front section adJacent the named flap having severing lines diverging from the position of said flap creating separate segments on said front section, the flap on the second named side section which lies in line with the flap of the first named side section being less in measurement along a line paralleling its fold line of said flap than the total measurement of the said section along said fold line.

6. A container comprising connected side sections and a back and a front section, the several sections having flaps at their ends to create the top and bottom portions of such container, the front section having an opening therein at its upper edge to communicate with the interior space of the container, one of the flaps at the-top of one of the side sections being extended beyond the plane of said front section adapted to be folded down upon and to abut said front section to overlie the outer surface thereof to close said opening in the latter, said'ilap having a tab at each of two opposite edges, each overlying a. part of a side section for attachment thereto.

'7. A container comprising connected side sections and a back and a front section, the several sections having flaps at their ends to create the top and bottom portions of such container, the front section having an opening therein at its upper edge to communicate with the interior space of the container, one of the flaps at the top of one of the side sectionsbeing extended beyond the plane of said front section adapted to'be folded down upon and to abut said front section to overlie and close said opening in the latter,

' and a tab extending laterally from the side edge of the thus extended portion asit overlies said front section, to overlie a side section for securement to the latter. I

8. A container comprising connected side sections and a back and a front section, the several sections having flaps at their ends to create the folded down upon and to abut said front section and to overlie and close said opening in the latter, and a tab extending laterally from each side edge of the thus extended portion to overlie and for securement each to a side section, the said extended portion being scored along the bases of the tabs to permit separation of the said ex- I tended portion from the thus secured tabs.

9. A container comprising connected side sections and a back and a front section, the several sections having flaps at their ends to create the top and bottom portions of such container, the front section having an opening therein at its upper edge to communicate with the interior space of the container, one of the flaps at the top of one of the side sections being extended beyond the plane of said front section adapted to be tainer, one of the flaps when folded terminating distant from the front section providing an opening-between said flap and said front section, the flap of the other side section adapted when folded upon the first named flap to close said opening, the said flap thus folded upon the first named flap being extended outward beyond said front section and adapted to fold down upon the outer surface of the same, and a tab at each of two opposite edges of the flap, each adapted to overlie a portion of a side section adjacent the named op ning.

11. A container including in its construction side sections, and a back and a front section, the side sections each having a flap at its top edge for closing the container, one of the flaps when folded terminating distant from the front section providing an opening between the two, said front section having an opening at its top edge communicating with the first named opening, the flap of the other side section being extended outward beyond the plane of the said front section adapted to fold upon the outer surface of the latter, said flap and its extended portion jointly adapted to overlie and close both said openings, and a tab extending from each of two opposite edges of the flap, each to overlie a portion of a side section.

12. A container including in its construction side sections, and a. back and a front section, said front section adJacent the top of the container being severed along lines diverging downwardly from the top edge thereof providing separate seg-- ments as connected parts of said front section adapted todndependently swing beyond the plane of the latter in either of two directions, and a flexible strip having a length greater than the width of, the front section, the same being attached at each of its ends to a side section of the container and spanning the said front section at the position of the said segments, said strip also having attachment to the latter and to the front section at the'bases of said segments, the length of said strip being such as to permit the segments to swing into the container and outward away from the plane of said front section in a hinging action to serve as a pouring spout.

13. A container including in its construction side sections, and a back and front section, said front section adjacent the top Of the container being provided with a recess therealong at its edge providing an opening extending in the direction of the bottom of said container, said front section being severed from said opening downwardly at divergent spaced positions forming separate segments adapted to swing beyond the plane of the section in either of two directions, and a flexible strip having a length greater than the width of the front section, the same being attached at each of its ends to a side section of the container and spanning the said front section at the position of the said segments, said strip also having attachment to the latter and to the front section at the bases of said segments, the length of said strip being such as to permit the segments to swing into the container and outward away from the plane of said front section in a hinsing action to serve as a pouring spout.

14. A container having a plurality of sides, and a flap terminating each of two or said sides serving as closure portions for said container, there being an opening at a corner of the latter common to one of the flaps and one of the sides, the other of the flaps being extended outwardly from the container beyond the plane 01' said side adapted to overlie the said common opening in said flap and side. and to overlie the outer surface of the latter. and a tab extending from each of two 8 opposite edges of the outwardly extending flap. each tab adapted to overlie a part or the adjacent opposite sides oi the container for secure ment to the same.
