Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed June 10, 1904;. Serial No. 212,030.
To all whom it play concern:
Be it known that l, WILL A. ()LAsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Studley, in the county of Sheridan, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hammers, and more particularly to the heads of hammers, the object of the invention being to provide a harnmer-head which may be particularly valuable to a blacksmith in working a plow owing to the facility with which the hammer may be used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hammer wherein the handle maybe readily shifted and when shifted will make the hammer right-handed or left-handed, as the case may be.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a hammer embodying the present invention with the head in position for right-hand use. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the hammer-head with the hammer in position for left-hand use. Fig. 3 is a transverse section tl'irough the socketed portion of the head.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a hammer comprising a head and a handle. The head consistsof the cross-sectionally-rectangular middle or body portion 5, there being at one end of the head the slightlyconvex face 6, adjacent to which the l'iead is rounded or cylindrical in form, as illustrated. At the opposite end of the head from the face 6 there is formed the striking edge 7, which extends diagonally of the body portion 5 of the head, this striking edge beingstraight in the direction of its longitudinal extension, while it is convex transversely, the material of the head at each side of the edge 7 being cut away, as illustrated.
Formed diametrically through the body portion 5 are sockets 10 and 11, which intersect at right angles, these sockets being elliptical in cross-section and designed to receive interchangeably the handle 12.
Upon reference to the drawings it will be noted that when the handle is engaged in one of the sockets the edge 7 slants in one direction and when the handle is engaged in the other socket the edge slants in the other direction, thus permitting the handle to be held at an angle to either side face of a plow, while the edge 7 is parallel with such face.
7 hat is claimed is M A hammer com prising a head having sockets therein at right angles to each other and a handle adapted for engagement with said sockets interchangeably, the head having at one end a transverse striking edge which bisects the angle between the sockets.
lntestimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
l Vll'JL A. CLASON.
