UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
EDWARD G. WEITZ, OF'ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HORSESHOERS'HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 725,522, dated April 14, 1903.
Application filed January 15, 1903.. Serial N01 139,283. (No model.) 1
T0 0% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. WEITZ, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoers Hammers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to horseshoers hammers; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure l is a perspective view of a hammer, showing its position relative to its use in performing the main operation on the horseshoe. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing its position relative to performing another operation on the horseshoe. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing its position relative to performing still another operation on the horseshoe.
My invention is especially designed to be used in putting toe-calks on horseshoes and also in finishing and pointing the heel-calks.
Referriugto the drawings, 1 indicates the head of the hammer, which is square and has a plain smooth surface. The hammer is provided with a hole 2 in order to receive the han- The hammer is also provided with a rounded face f on its front face, which is used as illustrated in Fig. 3 in drawing out the heel-calks 5. The face opposite to the head 1 is provided with a V-shaped recess 6, and the surfaces of said V-shaped recesses are provided with rounded faces '7, said recesses thus forming in the face opposite to the head 1 of the hammer two rounded pointed lobes 8. This peculiarly-shaped recess 6 is used for welding the toe-call: to the shoe. It will be noticed that the shape of this recess is such that when the hammer is used in the operation of putting on the toe-call: by striking the toe-call; into this recess 6 such an operation does not change the construction of the toecalk.
To effect the final welding of the toe-calk to the shoe, the operation is as shown in Fig. 2, where the lobe 8 next to the hand of the operator is used. It will be noticed in this connection that the inner face of the'hammer next to the opefators hand is not curved, like the outer face 4, which outer face 4 is used in drawing out the calk, as illustrated in Fig. 3 and as heretofore stated. In other words, the operative faces and surfaces of my hammer are as follows: a V-shaped recess extending transversely of the hammer having rounded inner surfaces, lobes 8, projecting from said.-
recess, and a rounded face 4. I have found in practice that these faces are necessary for a horseshoers tool or hammer. A hammer made with these faces I have used practically for five or six months, finding the same practically perfect for the uses intended.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is--- A horseshoers hammer having a plain.
square face 1, a transverse V-shaped recess 6 provided with roundedfisurfaces 7, transverse lobes 8 and a rounded front face 4; the outer of said lobes 8 with the rounded face 4 adapted for the purpose of drawingout the heel-- Witnesses: E. E. LONGAN,
ALFRED A. Eroxs.
