Be it known that I, EDWARD BLOUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camilla, in the county of Mitchell and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Ax, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to axes, and more particularly to that class thereof known as box-axes, and the object of my invention is to provide an ax which shall be of such construction that an ordinary handle or helve can be fixed therein from either end, so that the ax can be' used by either a right or left hand operator; and a still further object is to provide an ax of such construction that the handle when connected thereto will have the proper upward and outward inclination, thereby avoiding bending the handle, as is the general practice atthe present time.

With these objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in constructing an ax with a fiat face and one rounded face. The head of the an is bent slightly away from the straight face of the blade, an eye being arranged in the head, the face of said eye adjacent to the flat face being convexed, the top and bottom faces of the eye being inclined in opposite directions from points adjacent to the center, said eye being so constructed for the purpose of enabling a straight handle to be used in connection with the ax with the advantagesbefore referred to.

The invention consists also in certain details of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective View of an ax constructed in accordance with myinvention, showing the rounded face of said ax. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the flat face of the ax. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4,. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4 4: of Fig.

An ax constructed in accordance with my invention comprises a head A, and a blade B, said blade being made with a fiat face B and a rounded face B The head is also constructed With a flat face A and the rounded face A and it will be noted that the head is bent or inclined slightly toward the rounded face, as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4:. The head is formed with an eye C, the top and bottom faces of said eye being inclined in opposite directions from the central point C, as most clearly shown at G The side of the eye adjacent to the flat face of the head is convexed, as shown at O and the opposite face is slightly concaved, as shown at C The major axis of the eye is inclined, as shown in Fig. 4, and this major axis is in direct aiinement with the cutting edge of the axis, so that the full power of the stroke will be directed to the cutting edge.

By making the eye in the peculiar manner shown and described I am enabled to employ an ordinary handle or helve, and by having the top and bottom faces of the eye inclined, as shown at C the proper upward inclination will be given to the handle, thereby giving the operator the benefit of an upright or standing position, and by having the eye inclined in the opposite directions from central points, as indicated in Fig. 3, the handle can be inserted from either end and will still have a proper inclination. By having the sides of the eye convexed and concaved, as shown in Fig. 5, the proper lateral inclination will be given to the handle, and it will also be noted that it is immaterial which end the handle is inserted the proper inclination will be maintained, thereby enabling the ax being used by either a right or left hand operator. Furthermore, this construction of head brings the flat face of the ax to the face of the box and only necessitates grinding on one side, thus preserving the original integrity of the temper on the flat side.

It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly simple and eflicient construction of ax capable of carrying out all of the objects hereinbefore referred to.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is' I 1. An ax comprisinga head and blade portion, said head and blade portions being each formed with one flat face and one rounded face, the head portion being arranged at an inclination to the blade portion, said head portion having an eye extending therethrough,

to at an inclination to the blade portion and havingan eye', the top and bottom of said eye being inclined in opposite directions from the central points, one side of the eye being convexed and the opposite side concaved, as set forth.
