CENTRIFUGAL OR SIMILAR PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1905.
Application filed November 1, 1904. Serial No. 230,922.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, county of Essex, and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal or Similar Pumps, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to an improved centrifugal or similar pump having a plurality of impellersoperatingin multiple, the especial object of the invention being to provide a simple, compact, and eflicient construction of pump in which the impellers are inclosed within the same casing and havea common suction and delivery.
Iaim especially at the production of a small compact pump by which a large delivery shall be secured with small impellers, so that the latter can be run at a very high rate of speed as, for instance, when the impellers are directly connected to a steam-turbine or other high-speed motor.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, I have shown the invention as applied in its preferred form in connection with two impellers, and this construction will now be described in detail and the features forming the invention particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the pump. Fig. 2 is a delivery-end elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan View. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken centrally through the impellers on a larger scalethan Figs. 1 to 3. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line impellers thus taking suction at each side around the shaft G from the common suctionchamber C and delivering outward through the usual throat to the volute impeller-casings D D. The pump is shown as formed in two parts divided horizontally on the shaft-line, and the volute casings D D are shown as supported within the casing A by vertical ribs 11 from the base-plate and side ribs 12; but it will be understood that the proper construction and strength of the parts may be secured in'any other suitable manner.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact form or construction of the pump shown, but that these may be Varied widely while retaining the invention defined by the claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a plurality of pump-impellers and impeller-casings, of a common suction-chamber for the impellers inclosing the suction portion of the impellers, and a common delivery for said impeller-cas lngs.
2. A centrifugal or similar pump, having a plurality of impellers and impeller-casings having suction-openings at each side of the impellers, a common suction-chamber for said impellers, a casing iuclosing said impellers and suction-chamber, and a common delivery into which said impeller-casings merge.
3. A centrifugal or similar pump, having casing A provided with suction-opening O, impeller-casings D, D. having double suctionimpellers E, E within said casing A, and a common delivery for the impeller-casings.
4:. A centrifugal or similar pump, having casing A provided with suction-opening C,
Witnesses.
