CENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
Application filed February 23, 1905. Serial no. 246,936.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. PFADT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Centrifugal Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in multiple rotary pumps for raising and forcing water operating consecutively by centrifugal and impulsive force.
In multiple pumps having multi 1e impellers secured upon a common s aft in series, to obtain good practical results there should be a good communication between the sections forming the series, and such means for changing the direction of the impelled currents under high velocit and constantly increasing pressure as to o viate as much as possible any churning of the liquid being pumped, and the loss of power caused thereby.
To this end my improvement consists in the features of construction hereinafter set forth and describedjand illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section ofa multiple rotary pump embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line .x.7c in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is' a transverse section of the same on the line yy in Fig. 1.
looking in the direction of the arrow.
In these drawings illustrating my invention, A A A and B are sections forming the pump-shell. The sections A- and A being divided by radial partitions C of a diameter egual to the diameter of the impellers D W iich are secured to and driven b a shaft D, so that the impellers I) 0 mm c in the chambers E between the walls 0 and the walls a. The chambers F on the op osite sides of the partitions C are provided with radial partition walls f which, divide the chambers F into sections. These partitions f are provided with curved extensions f which extend over the peripheries .of the partitions C and across the chambers E outside of the peripheries of the impellers D so that the circular and centrifugal travel of the fluid thrown outward by the impellers D is deflected thereby sidewise over the peripheries of the partitions C into the chambers F and directed by the partition walls f therein in a direct line to the openings a in the chamber walls a to be taken up by the succeeding impeller D until it isfinally forced through the outlet B" of the pump.
In the drawings I have shown the walls or partitions as straight radial ribs. vious, however, that if desired they may be curved to any degree desired.
In operation the fluid is. taken into the pump through the inlet a} and passes through the central opening a, in the wall a, of the section A and thence is taken u by the first impeller D and forced outwar against the curved partitions f of the radial walls f, at the perlpheries of the impellers, in the first chamber E, and is deflected by said curved portions f over into the first cha'mber F and downward between said walls f "to the opening a inthe section A from whence It'IS taken by the second impeller D and again forced outward against the curved ortions f of the walls f in the second cham or F in like manner, and again travels inward -to the central opening a in the wall a of the section A and thence it is taken by the impeller D in the last chamber and forced out through the discharge B of the pump.
In the drawings have shown and described a pump having three impellers, but it is obvious that two or any number of impellers may be used as desired.
Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to make and use the same,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States is:
1. In a centrifugal pump, a pump shell having a chamber with a central inlet at one end and a central outlet at the other, a disk forming a radial wall in said. chamber, an
in said chamber extending over the periphcry of the impeller-and the periphery of the radial wall, on lines diagonal to the axis of the, impeller, substantially as set forth.
It is ob- 10 impeller between said radial wall and the inv let end of said chamber, and deflector plates 2; In a centrifugal pump, a pump shell having achamber therein with a central in-;
let at one end and a central outlet at the other end, a disk forming aradial wall in said of the impeller, and extending longitudinally radial wall and the inlet end of each oham-' chamber, an impeller between said radial her, and deflector plates in each chamber,
Wall and the inlet end of said chamber, and deflector plates in said chamber, portions of which are inclined to lines radial to the axis JOHN c. PFADT;
over the eripheries of the impeller and radial wall on mes diagonal to theaxis of the impeller substantially as set forth.
