GARRETT IVALLAOE POOLE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE NEW JERSEY BLOWER COMPANY, OF
SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,381, dated February 6, 1894.
. Application filed May 9, 1893. Serial No. 473,505. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARRETT WALLACE POOLE, acitizen of the United States, residing in Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Blowers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in combined suction and contrifugal blowers, and consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device with certain portions broken away, and Fig. 2 is a partly sectional view thereof taken on the line a; of Fig. 1. 7
In said drawings a represents the shell or casing of the blower having an outlet b. The inner circumference of said shell is provided with a projection 0 extending at or about the mouth of the outlet Z7 -and contracting the diameter of the shell at that point, substantially as shown in Fig. 1. A shaft d, revolving in suitable bearings d penetrates the shell a at its center in the usual manner, and motion is conveyed to said shaft 01 through the pulleys d Keyed to the shaft (1 is a spider 6 carrying the cylinder f and the chambers g of the suction wheel which latter is arranged concentrically in the shell as shown in Fig. 1. The cylinder f perforates the center of the casing a and extends beyond each side thereof (see Fig. 2). This cylinder f is provided with a series of openings 2' in com munication with the chambers g of the suction wheel. Keyed to said shaft d and on either side of the spider e are collars It, carrying a series of twisted blades m of a number preferably corresponding to the number of chambers or buckets of the wheel. The center or radial line of each blade m is by preference placed opposite the inner end of the partition n separating the openings 2' of the cylinderf into the chambers g of the wheel.
I have illustrated in the drawings a blower, in which the cylinderf, spider e carrying the drum, and the blades or are all keyed to the same shaft and therefore have the same rate of speed in revolving. I do not desire also to confine myself to the particular form of blower wheel shown, as it is manifest that any wheel in which the compartments have an opening into the center of the wheel may be used without avoiding this invention. It is to be understood that the outside air is scooped or forced into the interior of the easing through the cylinder f by the revolving fan blades on. The air is then sucked out from the space between the fans (by both the centrifugal force and the suction force of the revolving drum) into the compartments g. The air is next discharged from the outlets of said compartments into the casing a. The contracted inner wall of this casing a directs thecurrent ofdischarged air directly totheoutlet I? and prevents the commingling of counter currents at the mouth of said outlet. The revolving fans serve also to confine the air within the casing and prevent its escape from the cylinder f. By means of this the pressure of air within the casing is greatly increased and a constant and increased pressure on the discharge outlet maintained.
Having'thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a suction blower, the combination of the revolving drum, with a stationary chamber arranged concentrically around said drum and provided with an outlet, said casing being also provided at or about the mouth of said outlet with an inwardly extending projection (c), substantially as described.
2. The combination in a blower, of the suction wheel consisting of a series of curved chambers a casing provided with centrally located inlet openings, a shaft traversing said casing and openings, a spider secured to said shaft, a cylinder arranged on said spider and carrying the curved chambers of the suction wheel, said cylinder being in communication with the said chambers of the suction'wheel have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of and extending into and through the inlet April, 1893. openings of the casing, and a series of blades 1 w secured to said shaft at or near the outer ends GARRHL T WALLALE POOLE 5' of the said cylinder, substantially as and for Witnesses:
the purposes described. ALFRED GARTNER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I I HENRY E. EVERDING.
