vented a new and Improved Centrifugal -1ump or Blower, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new. and improved centrifugal pump,
blower 'or similar machine, whichis simple and durable in construction, rendered very effective in operation by the use of a special runner and a lurality of suction chambers,
so that the fluid passcs through the machine in stages with increasing velocity, the fluid -finally leaving the machlne under a desired pressure and predetermined delivery capacity.
- The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same,
which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference vindicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with the contracted inlet nozzle removed, and arranged as a two-stage blower; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a like view of the same, arranged as a three-stageblower; Fig. 4 isa similar view of 'the same, arranged as a three-stage double intake blower; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the improvement, arranged'as a pump; Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the same on the line .66 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a'diagramm'atic view of the two-stage ma chine; Fig- 8 is a like view of the threestag'e machine; Fig. 9 is an enlarged face view of one of the blades for the two-stage machine; Fig. 10 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 10.'1-1O of Fig. -9; "Fig. 11 is an enlarged face view of one of the blades for a three-stage machine;

The casing A oft-he blower or fan illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, is preferably of spiral shape, and in it is mounted to turn the runner B, secured on a shaft C extending through one side of the casing and journaled at its outer end in a suitable bearing D, the shaft being connected at the outer terminal by a pulley E, or other means, with other machinery, for imparting a rotary motion to the shaft C and consequently to the runner B. A contracted inlet. nozzle F opens'into the first suction chamber G, centrally arranged in the runner B, so that the air or other fluid is drawn in by the runner B through the contracted inlet nozzle F and is given a predetermined velocity by the runner andis finally forced out through the outlet H of the casing A,
as hereinafter more fully explained.
The runner B is constructed in detail as follows: The frame of the runner consists of an outer ring B and a diskB attached to the shaft C, and to the opposite faces of the ring B and the outer end of the disk B are bolted or otherwise secured the flanges B rigidly connected with each other by blades B, B, of which the blades B are curved outwardly andrearwardly while the blades B? are curved outwardly and forwardly, considering that the' runner B is rotatin in the direction of the arrow (1'. The a jacent ends ofthe blades B, B are spaced apart so as to form an annular second suction chamber G, and the blades B form an inner set of blades while the blades B form an outer set of blades, and the blades B alternate with the blades B, as will be readilyunderstood by reference to Figs. 1, 7, 9,10, 13 and 14.
When the runner B isrotated, air or other fluid'is drawn through the contracted nozzle F into the first suction chamber G, and then the fluid is scooped up by the innermost sets of blades B and deliveredby the same to the second suction chamber G, in whichthe fluid is $000 ed u by the outer set of 'bla'des B, and dellvere into the casing A,i fr'om' which the fluid passes by the outlet to its place of discharge. By reference tothe parallelograms' of forces shown in Fi 7, the blades B take up the fluid'in the rst'suction chamber G at a peripheralv'elooit'y and deliver the fluid to the second suction chamber G at an increased velocity, and the blades B take up the fluid nermost and outermost blades B and B,
and the blades B are slightly curved forwardly and outwardly and spaced from the blades B to form the second suction chamber G, and spaced from the blades B to form a third suction chamber G Thus when the runner B is rotating, the bladesB scoop up the fluid from the first suction chamber G, and deliver it to the second suction chamber G, from which the fluid is passed b the intermediate blades B into the annular third suction chamber G, from which the fluid is taken up by the blades B and delivered into the outer portion. of the casing A and to the outlet H. As indicated in Figs. lland 12, the correspondingblades B, B B are integrally connected with the flan s B, fastened'by bolts or other means to t e ring B and the disk B. The inner or. adjacent ends of the blades B, B may be strengthened by connecting ribs B, as
indicated in Figs. 13 and 14.
As shown in Fig. 4, the casingA is provided on opposite sides with contracted inlet nozzles 'F, F and in this case the runner B has its ,frame formed of outer rings B, B and its central disk B secured to the shaft C,=journaled at both outer ends in bearin D.' The rings B", B are connected with the disk B by the blades B, B, the same as shown in 1 and 2,'or
by the bladesB, B, B, as indicated. in
Fig. 3, it being understood in this case that a double intake and a double runner are provided.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by i the arrangement described, the fluid is acted on in successive stages in the suction chambers G, G, G, so as to increase the velocity of the fluid, it being understood that the suction chambers G, G are preferably of varying sizes relatively one to the other; that is, for medium pressure and high delivery capacity, the third suction chamber G is larger than the second suction chamber G, but for high pressure machines, the capacity .of the third suction chamber is preferably equal to or smaller than the capacity of the second suction chamber G.
As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the casing A of the centrifugal pump is provided at one face with a suction pipe F, and. in the casing A rotates the runner B of the twoblade or three-blade design, the same as shown and described above in reference to A at the outlet H at a is scooped up by the blades B and delivered lay the latter to the second suction chamber tobe then taken up by the blades B and delivered to the casing'A and the delivery or-outlet H. If a runner B havin three sets of blades is used in the pu mp,'t en the liquid. is passed successively from the first suction chamber G to the second suction chamber G, then to the third suction chamber G2 and finally into the outer ortion of the casing A and to the deliverygfi. In practice, I prefer to attach the sets of blades B and, B or B4, B, B on corre sponding fla B, which in turn are bolted to the ring-B and the diskxB, but, if desired, the blades B, B, B may be {as tened in positionion the frame of the runner.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters,

3. A centrifugal pump, blowerfor like machine, comprising a casing, a runner entirely therein having a plurality of concentric suction chambers within the runner and in each chamber.
4. A centrifugal pump, blower. or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner, the casing having an inlet and an Outlet, and the runner having a series of blades, and a plurality of series of suction chambers, the
suction chambers alternating with the of blades, said chambers being entirely within and traveling with the runners.
5. A centrifugal pump, blower -orlike machine, comprising a casing and a runner, the casing having an inlet and an outlet,- and the runner having a central suction chamber, an annular series of blades encircling the centralsuctionchamber', one of said series beingspaced radially with respect to theother series, whereby to form "a suction chamber between the series and concentric" blades, the series of blades alternating with the suction chambers, the blades of one series being curved in one direction and the blades of the other series in the opposite direction.
7. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner. the casing having an inlet and an outlet. and the runner having annular series of blades, the series being spaced apart radially to form an annular suction chamber within the runner.
8. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner, the casing having an inlet and an outlet. and the runner having annular series of blades, the series being spaced apart ra dially to form a plurality of annular suction chambers within the runner.
9. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner, the casing having an inlet and an outlet, and the runner having annular series of blades, the series being spaced apart radially to form a plurality of annular suc tion chambers within the runner of varying capacity.
10. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner, the casing having an inlet and an outlet, and the runner having annular series of blades, the blades of one series extending in an opposite direction to the blades of the other series, the series being spaced apart radially to form an annular suction chamber within the runner.
11. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner, the casing having an inlet and an outlet, and the runner having suction chambers therein having annular series of blades, the series being spaced apart radially to form a suction chamber between each series, the blades of the inner series being curved backward and outward, and the blades in the outer series being curved forward and outward in the ,direction in which the runner is running.
12. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner, the casing having an inlet and an outlet, and the runner having suction chambers and annular series of blades, the series being spaced in art radially to form a suction chamber between each series, the blades of the inner series being curved backward and outward and the blades in the outer series being curved forward and outward in the direction in which the runner is running, the inner series of blades surrounding a first suction chamber, and the series being spaced apart to form an annular second suction chamber.
13. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner,
the casing having an inlet and an outlet, the runner having suction chambers and annular series of inner, outer and intermediate blades, the series being spaced apart radially, the blades alternating with the chambers of the inner series being curved backward and outward, the blades in the outer series being curved forward and outward in the direction in which the runner is running, and the blades in the intermediate series being slightly curved forward and outward.
14'. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner, the casing having an inlet and an outlet, and the runner having suction chambers and annular series of inner, outer and intermediate blades alternating with the chambers, the blades of the inner series being curmd backward and outward, the blades in the outer series being curved forward and outward in the direction in which the runner is running, and the blades in the intermediate series being slightly curved forward and outward, the series of blades being spaced apart to form annular concentric suction chambers.
15. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, comprising a casing and a runner, the casing having an inlet and an outlet, and the runner having suction chambers and annular series of blades alternating with the chambers, the blades of the inner series being curved backward and outward and inclosing a first suction chamber, the blades in the outer series being curved forward and outward in the direction in which the runner is running, and the blades of the intermediate series being slightly curved forward and outward, the series of blades being spaced apart to form annular concentric suction chambers.
16. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, provided with a runner having blades arranged in concentric annular series, the blades of one series alternating with the blades of the other series and the series being spaced apart radially to form an annular suction chamber within the runner and traveling therewith.
17. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, provided with a runner having blades arranged in concentric series, the blades of one series alternating with the blades of the other series, the series being spaced apart to form an annular suction chamber within the runner and traveling therewith, and the blades of the innermost series being curved rearward and outward and the blades of the outer series being curved forward and outward.
18. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, provided with a runner having blades arranged in concentric series, the blades of one series alternating with the blades of the other series and the series being spaced apart to form an annular suction chamber, the blades of the innermost series being curved rearward and outward and the blades of the outer series being curved forward and outward, a pair of adjacent inner and outer blades being integrally connected, and a runner frame on which the said pair of blades are secured.
19. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, provided with a runner having blades arranged in concentric series, the blades of one series alternating with the blades of the other series and the series being spaced apart to form an annular suction chamber, the blades of the innermost series being curved rearward and outward and the blades of the outer series being curved forward and outward, attaching flanges integrally connecting the ends of a pair of adjacent inner and outer blades with each other, and a ring frame on which the said flanges are secured.
20. A centrifugal pump, blower or like machine, having a rotor provided with suction chambers entirely within and inclosed by the rotor, and traveling with the rotor during its rotation, and a series of blades in each chamber.
21. A centrifugal pump blower or like machine, comprising a casing, a runner within the casing and provided with suction chambers entirely within and inclosed by the runner and traveling therewith during its rotation, said runner having a single inlet, and a series of blades in each of the said chambers.
