To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I JUsTUs .ROYAL Kilt NEY, a citizen of the Tjnited States of America, and a resident of Allston, in the county of Sufiolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps and has for its object the production of a high pressure pump which will be equally balanced and will be adapted to pump crude material.
The invention consists primarily of a plurality of revoluble bladed members adapted to force'm'aterial from the outer ends of a casing to a central discharge opening therein.
The invention further consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given. I
For the purpose of illustrating the invention one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results although it is to be'understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described-except as required by the scope of the appended claims.

The upper part of the casing 10 is provided. with as-cylindrical portion 14; from The central portion of the shaft 19 is providedwith keyways 22 and surrounding the opposite ends of said central portion of the shaft 19 are a plurality of cylindrical members 23 secured to the shaft 19 by means of ke s 24 extending into the keyways 22.

The forward ends of said helical blades 25 are tapered as-indicated at. 26 in Fig. a of the drawings.
The rear end 27 of each blade 25 overlaps the forward end 26 of a blade 25 adjacent thereto as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Each revoluble cylindrical member 23 is pumped, from freely circulating in a helicalpath in the cylindrical portion 14:.
Betweenv the hubs 28 of the inner cylindrical member 23 is interposed a cylindrical separator, 32 surrounding the shaft 19 and the members 23 in the opposite ends ofv the cylindrical portion 14: of the casing '10 are forced into contact with the ends of this separator 32 by means of the nuts 33 V threaded to the threaded portions 20 of the revoluble shaft 19.'
The spiders or deflectors 2930 are prevented from end movement by means of members 34 extending through the wall of the cylindrical portionl-t of the casing 10 into the ends ofthe arms 30 of said spiders or deflectors. 7
By this construction the separators which are fixed from rotation are prevented from contacting with the revoluble cylindrical construction connected to one of the reduced ends 18.
As the shaft 19 rotates at high speed, air or other material being pumped will be forced inwardly by the helical blades 25, to the center of the cylindrical portion 14 to be discharged through the outlet 15.
It is obvious that the helicalblades 25, on one side of the center of the shaft 19 are right-handed while those on the opposite side are left-handed.
As a consequence, all end thrust on the shaft is eliminated as the pump is perfectly balanced. I

During the rotation of the bladed mem bers 2325, a suction is created which draws the material into the inlet opening 12 through the passage 11 to the passages 35 inthe oppositely disposed end plates 16 and then into the opposite ends of the cylindrical portion 14. L
As these bladed members 23- -25 continue to rotate, the forward tapered ends 26 of the blades 25 will cut off portions of the material being pumped and owing to the inclination thereof, the blades 25 will force said material toward the center of the cylindrical portion 14, the radiating arms 30 of the spider or deflector 29 preventing the material from freely traveling in a helical path in the cylindrical portion 14 and causing it to move in a path parallel with the axis of the shaft 19.
The baldes 25 extend to or nearly to the inner wall of the cylindrical portion 14 of the casing 10 and the operating faces of the blades 25 are all outside of the periphery of the cylindrical members 23, the peripheries of which are of sufiicient distance from the axis of the shaft 19 to insurethat the operating faces of said blades will be so located as to be most effective in forcing the material inwardly toward the center and to the outlet 15.

By means of this construction, material may be pumped under high pressure and the material to be operated upon may be either air or coarse material such as crude petroleum and the like.
With this construction, the material may be pumped even when it contains considerable sediment or other foreign substances as there is no bearing part which is liable to be iniured or clogged by means of suchforeign su stances.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be fully understood without further description.
Having thus described my invention, I claimv 1., In a machine of the class described, the combination of a casing having inlet and outlet openings; a revoluble shaft in said casing; a plurality of members having abutting hubs secured to and revoluble with said shafton opposite sides of said outlet opening, each member having a plurality of helica]. blades extending to the wall of a cylindrical portion of said casing; and spiders surrounding said hubs and having separated radial arms fixedly secured in the cylindrical portion of said casing between said bladed members.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a casing having inlet, and outlet openings and provided with a cylindrical portion having longitudinal grooves in the inner wall thereof; a revoluble shaft centrally disposed in said cylindrical portion; a plurality of bladed members having abutting hubssecured to and revoluble with said shaft; and spiders interposed between and surrounding the hubs of the bladed members and having radial arms the outer ends of which are separated and positioned in said grooves.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a casing with open ends and having a cylindrical chamber and a passa e beneath said chamber both extending lengt- 1- wise of said casing, said chamber having spaced grooves extending lengthwise of the wall thereof; a removable member positioned midway the ends of said chamber and having a cylindrical bearing in alinement with the axis of said chamber; end plates secured to the ends of said casing and forming connecting passages between the ends of said chamber and the passage beneath said chamber, said plates having cylindrical hearings in alinement with the axis of said chamber; a revoluble shaft in said bearings; a plurality of members having abutting hubs secured to said shaft on opposite sides of said central bearing and each provided with a plurality of helical blades extending to the wall of said cylindrical chamber; and spiders consisting of annular members surrounding said hubs and having separated radial arms the ends of which are positioned in said grooves.
In a machine of the class described. the combination of a casing with open ends and having a cylindrical chamber and a passage beneath said chamber both extending lengthwise of said casing, said chamber having spaced grooves extending lengthwise of the wall thereof; a removable member positioned midway the ends of said chamber and having a cylindrical bearing in alinement with the axis of said chamber, said member having separated radial arms the ends of which are positioned in said grooves; end plates secured to the ends of said casing and forming connecting passages between the ends of said chamber and the passage beneath said chamber. said plates having cylindrical bearings in alinement with the axis of said chamber; a revoluble shaft in said bearings; a plurality of members having abutting hubs secured to said shaft on opposite sides of said central bearing and each provided with a plurality of helical blades extending to the wall of said cylindrical chamber; spiders surrounding said hubs and fixedly secured'in said. chamber between said bladed members; an inlet to said passage; and an outlet from said chamber.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a casing with open ends and having a cylindrical chamber and a passage beneath said chamber both extending lengthwise of said casing; a removable member positioned midway the ends of said chamber and having a cylindrical bearing in aline ment with the axis of said chamber; end plates secured to the ends of said casing and forming connecting passages between the ends of said chamber and the passage beneath said chamber, said plates having cylindrical hearings in alinement with the axis of said chamber; a revoluble shaft in said bear ings having a central portion within said chamber provided with a key slot and reduced cylindrical portions in the hearings in said end plates; a plurality of members having abutting hubs keyed to said shaft on opposite sides of said central bearing and each provided with a plurality of helical blades extending to the wall of said cylindrical chamber; nuts threaded "to the opposite ends of the slotted portion of said shaft and bearing against the outer bladed members; an inlet to said passage; and an outlet from said chamber.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a casing with open ends and having a cylindrical chamber extending longitudinally thereof provided with separated longitudinal grooves in the wall thereof and a crescent-shaped passage beneath said chamber, said casing havinga vertical outlet from said chamber and a horizontal inlet to said passage; end plates to said casing having recesses in the inner Walls thereof communicating at opposite ends with the opposite ends of said passage and chamber, and said plates being provided with alined bearings; a revoluble shaft rotatable in said bearings and having an enlarged portion extending through said chamber; a removable member positioned midway of and provided with a bearing for said shaft, said member having curved deflecting walls adapted to deflect the material entering said chamber to said outlet, said removable member having radial arms the ends of which are positioned in the grooves of said chamber; nuts threaded to said shaft at the opposite ends of said enlarged portion; a plurality of members having abutting hubs secured to said shaft between said hubs and said removable bearing member and having helical blades on their peripheries; a plurality of spiders surrounding said hubs between said bladed members and having radial arms the ends of which extend into the grooves of said chamber; and means for preventing end movement of said spiders.
