TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN Be it known that we, JOHN W. Lrnnn and Hnnnr Snnnvn, of Alliance, in the county of Sterk, and in the State of Ohio, have inveutedrcertain new useful Improvements in Mode of Splicing Belting; and do 'hereby declare that the following is u full, clear, and exactdesoription thereoi','reference being had to the accon1- psnying drawings, and tothe 'letters of reference marked thereon. Y
In the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification* Figure 11's a view of the upper side, and
Figure 3 of the bottom or under side of the fastener.
Figure 2 is a side view. Y
The nature of our invention consists in a four-lipped or double fastener, ivith or without a hinge, so con s tructed as to clamp the ends of the belt; these lipsbeing.screrredtogether, the screws passing through the belts, thereby fastening them firmly,
To Venablel others skilled in the nrt to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operntion. l
In the annexed drawings, A represents the four-winged or fourlipped fastener, provided with s. hinge, C, on the lower or inner side of wliich are holes to admit screws e a, by which the belts are fastened. These screw-holes are inthe ends of the lips, and between these holes are one or more posts or pins, b b, to pass through the belts. The object of these posts or pins is to lessen the number of screws without weakening the fastening of the belt, und thereby lessening` the expense. Thepost orv pins I b, passing through the belt B, tit into holes or sockets in the ridge c, on the upper or outside lip of the fastener A. In this ridge are also holes to admit the ends of the screws a a when fastening tho belt. The object of the ridge c is togive ample room for the points of the posts and screws to accommodate a thick or thin belt, it being intended that for a. thick belt the screws and posts willenter just far enough to make a. secure fastening, and for a thin belt not to pass' beyond the outersnrface of the lip. The hinge-fastener is to be made alittle shorter than the width of the belt, thereby preventing any rubbing or wearing on conc-pulleys, guides, cross-belts, 5to. It cnn be madcperfcctly noiselessby putting two strips of thin leather on the under side ofthe fastener, and lapping-over the edge of the belt and under the upper lip, which makes them perfectly secure.
If it is desired, the hinge may be dispensed with, and the fastener constructed of two pieces, one upper and one under side, and fastened in the same manner as above described.
D represents the fastener made without zi. hinge.
The belt-fastener may be made of brass, iron, or en)rk other suitable material.
Having thus fullyldesoribed our invention, what we claim ns`new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The four-lipped metallic belt-fastener A, provided with the ridge c on its upper or outer side, nud with or without the hinge C, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this 4th dsyofMay, 1868.
JOHN W. LYDER, HENRY SHREVE.
