land, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Coat and Hat Racks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to hat and clothes racks; and its primary object is to provide a novel device of this character adapted to be used in public places to display a number of v advertisements, of which some are normally Y visible andothers normally invisible, said normally invisible advertisements being adapted to be brought to visual observation when an article of apparel is hung upon the hook of the rack and withdrawn when the article is removed.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-stated character which will be simple, cheap, durable, and eiiicient and which comprises but few parts so arranged and associated that they will not be liable 'to become broken or inoperative.

Further objects of the invention will appear as the nature of the same is morefully understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred form of my invention.

The invention consists of a base-plate, a

. guide-plate secured thereto and adapted to carry a normally visible advertisement, a hook-arm pivotally mounted upon said baseplate, a movable member adapted to carry a normally invisible advertisement and so assovciated with the hook-arm that said movable member is adapted to be moved upward to bring the normally invisible advertisement to visual observation when an article of apparel isl hung thereon, and a spring adapted to reversely turn said hook-arm upon its pivot to withdraw the normally invisible advertisement when the article of apparel is removed thereon to bring the normally invisible ad vertisement to view. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the invention, the hook-arm being shown in position it is caused to assume'when the article is removed therefrom to Withdraw the normally invisible advertisement. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view of the device. Fig. 4 is a view in rear elevation of the device. 5 is a detail perspective view of the guide-plate which is adapted to carry the normally visible advertisement, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the movable member adapted to carry the normally invisible advertisement.

Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 designates a base-plate struck up from any suitable material and having its vertical edges provided with backwardly-directed iianges 2, from which extend at right angles outwardly-directed flanges 3. The lower horizontal edge of said plate is also provided with an inwardly-directed flange 4L,from which projects a downwardlydisposed flange 5. The lianges 3 and 5 are lprovided with perforations 6, through which screws or other fastening means are adapted to pass to engage the wall or other support to secure the baseplate in applied position. The flanges 2 and 4 through virtue of their interposition between the flanges 3 and 5 and base-plate space said base-plate away from its support a suitable distance to permit of the reception of a movable member between the inner face of the base-plate and its support. The baseplate is provided at a point near its upper edge with an opening 7 and a guide-plate 8 is arranged in position to permit of an advertisement carried thereby being normally visible through said opening. The guide-plate is provided along its vertical edges with prongs 9, adapted to pass through perforations 10 in the iianges 2, said prongs being upset to securely fasten said guide-plate in applied position. The guide-plate is provided at points adjacent its vertical edges with slots 11, and it is spaced away from the inner face of the base-plate 1 a sufficient distance to receive therebetween a movable member 12. The movable member is also struck up from a single blank of material and is provided at points along its vertical edges and adjacent its up- IOO per edge with projections 13,'adapted to iit within the slots 11. The lower edge of the movable member is provided with a horizontally-disposed tongue 14, which is projected through a slot 15, situated in the lower portion of the base-plate.

Secured to the outer face of the base-plate 1 are parallel-arranged arms 16, adapted to have pivotally secured therebetween a hooliarm 17. The hook-arm is provided with an angularly-arranged slot 18, having centrally arranged therein a bolt 19. Mounted within the slot 18 about the bolt 19 is an expansionspring 20, the upper end of which is adapted to engage the under sides of the arms 16 to normally depress the inner end of the hooliarm 17. The inner end of the hook-arm is provided with a recess 21, adapted to receive the tongue 141, whereby the movable member is caused to either move upwardly when an article of apparel is hung upon the hook-arm or moved downwardly when the article of apparel is removed.

The operation of the device may be stated as follows: The inner end of the hook-arm is normally depressed, as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings, through virtue of the spring 20, and therefore the normally invisible advertisement which is carried by the movable member is withdrawn from view. When an article of apparel is hung upon the hook-arm, it is caused to turn upon its pivot to elevate the inner end and also cause the movable member to move upwardly to display the normally invisible advertisement. T his upward movement of the hook-arm is limited by engagement of the upper wall of the slot 15 by a shoulder 22 on the inner end of the hook-arm.

It is apparent from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that when the inner end of the hook-arm is depressed the normally invisible advertisement is withdrawn from view and the normally visible advertisement is in view and that when said inner end is elevated the normally invisible advertisement is brought to view and the normally visible advertisement is hid from view.

Having described my invention, what I claim is" 1. In a device of the character described, a base-plate provided with an opening, a guideplate secured to said base-plate and provided with an advertisement normally visible through said opening, said guide-plate being provided with slots, a movable member provided with means to engage in said slots, whereby said member is movabl y secured in applied position, said movable member being adapted tocarry a normally invisible advertisement, a hook-arm pivotally secured to the base-plate and having connection with said movable member whereby a downward movement oi' the front end of the hook-arm will move said member upward to display the advertisement carried thereby through the opening in said base-plate, and a reverse movement oi said hook-arm will move said movable member downward to withdraw said advertisement, and means for normally retaining the Vfront end of the hook-arm elevated to normally retain the normally invisible advertisement withdrawn from view.

In a device oi the class described, a baseplate provided with baclnvardly and outwardly directed iianges, said base-plate being provided with a vertically and a horizontally disposed slot, a guide-plate provided with vertical slots and adapted to carry an advertisement normally visible through the horizontal opening in the base-plate, prongs carried by said guide-'plate and adapted to engage said backwardly-directed flanges to secure the guide-plate in applied position, a movable member adapted to carry a normally invisible advertisement and provided with projections to engage in the slots in the guide-plate whereby said member is movably secured in applied position, said member being provided with a tongue adapted to project through the vertical slot in the baseplate, arms secured to the front of the baseplate, a hook-arm pivotally supported between said arms and provided with a recess adapted to receive said tongue whereby a movement of the hook-arm will operate the movable member, said hook-arm being provided with a slot, a bolt secured in the slot in the hook-arm, and a spring surrounding said bolt and engaging the under sides ol the arms carried by the base-plate to normally depress the rear end of the hook-arm.

In a device of the character described, a base-plate provided with an opening, a guideplate secured to said base-plate and provided with an advertisement adapted to be normally visible through said opening, a movable member provided with a normally invisible advertisement and having sliding connection with said guide-plate, said movable member being provided with a tongue, a hookarm pivotally mounted upon the base-plate and provided with a recess adapted to receive the tongue, and means for depressing the iuner end of the hook-arm when an article ot apparel is removed therefrom.
