Application filed November 12, 1904. Serial No. 232,475.
To all whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRIS W. BEERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carriers or Holders for Bottles and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of a simple, neat, serviceable, and inexpensive package-carrier or holder for jugs, glass bottles, jars, or similar fragile articles.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carrier or holder embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof with a bottle in position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of blank.
The carrier being collapsible may be conveniently and inexpensively made of cardboard.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the invention is illustrated as embodied in a carrier or holder, comprising two sections a b, which may be said to be nested. These sections are elongated strips or blanks of cardboard or any other suitable material, which are disposed at right angles to each other or may be said to constitute boxing-sections. The section a, which may be described as the framingsection, is creased or scored on the lines 1 and 2 to form the bottom and sides, and the overlapping top members 0, having the coincident slots or openings d. The section b, forming the other two sides of the carrier and which may be termed the supportingsection, is bent around the bottom of the section (a, and its sides are provided with tongues a, which pass upwardly through the slots or openings cl, thereby constituting an interlock for the two sections. The tongues e, in addition to their function as an interlock, may be provided with an opening f to serve as a finger-hold. I have also illustrated the application of a suitable seal g to prevent tampering with the contents of the carrier by unauthorized persons.
Referring to Fig. 3, therein is illustrated a single blank from which the carrier may be constructed. The blank is a cruciform member, the slotted arms h of which correspond to the framing-section a, and the arms 7:, carrying the tongues, corresponding to the supporting-section 6. Both types of carrier have certain advantages; but a distinct advantage of the carrier, Figs. 1 and 2, lies in the fact that it has a double or reinforced bottom.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains that modifications may be made in detail without departing from the spirit and scope of same. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinbefore described; but,
Having described the nature and objects of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A carrier, comprising a framing-section having two open sides and overlapping tops with slots, and a supporting-section embracing the bottom of the framing-section and having its walls passed through the open sides thereof, said supporting-section being provided with tongues which pass through the slots and terminate in a handhold, substantially as specified.
2. Acarriercomprisingtwo separable members whereof one is oblong in shape and has two open sides and a slotted top, and whereof the other is wedge shape and embraces the bottom of said first-mentioned member and has its walls inclined through the open sides thereof, said wedge-shape member terminating in tongues which pass through the slot and constitute a handhold, and a seal applied to said tongues, substantially as specified.
3. A carrier comprising two separable members, whereof one constitutes a framing-section having two open sides and overlapping tops with slots, and whereof the other constitutes a supporting-section embracing the bottom of the framing-section and having its Walls passed through the open sides thereof, said supportingsection being provided With tongues which pass through the slots and ter- 5 Ininate in a handhold, and a seal applied to said handhold, substantially as specified.
