` SPECIFICATION forming part of. Lettersrrjatent No, 728404, dated May 19, 1903.
Application ined July 1, 1902.- Yserai 115.113.992. (No modem T0 all whom it may con/cern: f
Be it known that we,JOHN H. MCGEHEE and MARCUS T. BROWER, citizens of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesame.
This invention relates to a carton for fruit, candy, and the like. In this class of devices it is desirable that the package shall not onlyl serve as a convenient carrier, but also that it shall serve the' purpose of presenting an attractive and enticing display of the contained articles. It is also desirable that the package shall be cheap and simple of construction and be readily adaptable to the methods of packing or filling usually employed.
The object, therefore, of the present invention is to provide a carton cheap and simple in character which will serve not only as a carrier for the transportation of ripe fruit and the like, but shall also serve to display its contents in an attractive manner. These objects are accomplished by means of the devices illustrated in theaccompanying draw-v ings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of our carton asa carrier, showingits contents arranged there- 1n. of the carton or sheet from which the carrier shown in Fig. 1 is formed. v
Referring to the drawings, lis a carton, box, receptacle, or carrier of any suitable form adapted to be opened from its lower side and having its top provided with a displayopening 2, occupying less than the area inclosed by the sides. vThis opening 2 is cut from the material of the top, leaving a flange or edge 3 surrounding it and projecting inwardly from the lateral sides of the boxvor carrier, an inwardly-projecting flange to the sides of the box forming a passe-partout of the top of the box or carrier and integral therewith.
The opening 2 may be of any suitable or orn amental character, and its inner edge may be formed into an ornamental design to add attractiveness to thepacking.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, on a smaller scale,
Y Referring to-Fig. 2, it will be seen that the -carton from which the. carrier is formed has its central portion or that part of 'thecarton which when formed into a carrier' constitutes when properly bent and interlocked it will form the display box or carrier illustrated in Fig. 1. The part 3 within the central square of dotted lines constitute the top of the box or inwardly-projecting iange of the sides. The parts marked 4 form the sides of the box when bent along the dotted lines Where they adjoin part 3. l By means of their notches 5 they interlock with each other. The parts 6 and 7 bent along their dotted lines constitute anouter or double side to the box over the locked sides and also a closing and locking portion for the bottom of the carrier. The hook-formed part 8 interlockswith the slit9 to secure the bottom against accidental opening. The parts 10 and 11 constitute protectin g-strips forming a partial double bottom for the box. The openings 12 and 13 are ventilating-openings. p
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fiat box-blank having a part adapted to constitutethe top of the box provided with a displayopening of less area than the part to leave a continuous surrounding Aiiange, parts secured to the edges of the'top part arranged to constitute the box sides and ends, and.
