WILLIAM ASFULLER, OF MARIETTA, OHIO.
BRUSH on Bnoowl MOISTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 786,802, dated Apr" 11, 1905.
Appiimion Iiiea January s, 1904. semi No'. 188,215.
To all whom it may con/cern.' y
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Brush or Broom Moistener, of which the following is a specification. y
. The invention relates to improvements in brush and broom moisteners.
The object of the present invention is to imthe discharge of the same to be controlled-by the person using-'the' broom, whereby a too rapid and undesirable discharge of the contents of the moistener is prevented.
A further object of the invention is to provide a neat and attractive moistening device of this character adapted to discharge its contents both internally and externally of a broom, to increase the effect of the same, and to enable the means for attaching the device to a broom to serve also as means for discharging the contents of the moistener.
The invention has also for its object to provide a broom-'moistener from which the contents willrbe discharged only when the broom is arranged nearly in a horizontal position, whereby the discharge of the contents of the moistener will be prevented when the broom is in an upright position for sweeping.
With these and other objects in view the `invention consists in the construction and or sacrificing any of the advantages of the in-- vention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a portion of a broom provided with a moistening device constructed in accordance spending parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a reservoir designed to contain water or oil for laying the dust or an antiseptic solution and constructed of sheet metal mately bowed front 8, and ends 4C, the front',
having a slightly-curved intermediate portion and angularly-disposed upper and lower portions, the upper portion 5 being adapted when the reseivoiris partially inverted .or 'brought to nearly a horizontal position to .direct the liquid contents to discharge-openings 6. The back or inner side 2 is perforated at intervals near its upper edge to form the dischargeopenings 6, and the water or liquid escaping through `these openings will be discharged on a broom atv the exterior thereof. V` In order to `increase the effect of the moistener and prevent waste of the contents thereof, a series of i hollow liquid-discharging and supporting hooks 7 is provided. These hooks are adapted to engage the bottom row 8 of stitches of a broom 9, Wherebythe moistening device is applied to the saine, and the said hooks'extend into. the interior of the broom and are adapted to discharge the contents of the moistener at diiferent points within the broom.
-The hooks extend from the upper portion of the back of the reservoir to approximately vthe bottom thereoibeing beveled or out away at their lower ends to provide points l0 for enabling them to be readily inserted in a broom. rIhe upper portions 1l of the hooks are suitably secured tothe moistener, and the upper terminals of the hooks pierce the inner or rear side of the moistener and communicate with the interior thereof. These hooks consist of short tubes, and their upper terminals may be arranged at any desired point adjacent to the top of the reservoir.
The top of the reservoir is provided witha suitable filling-opening having a projecting ange and normally closed by a screw-cap 12;
. but any other suitable means may beV employed lquantity of the contents will be discharged both internally and externally of the broom, and when the broom'is in an upright position during use the discharge-openings and the upper end of the hollow hooks which constitute the discharging means will be located above the surface of the liquid, and the latter will thereby be prevented from escaping from the reservoir. rlhe discharge of the liquid is thereby placed under the control of the person using the broom, and there is no liability of a too rapid discharge.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A moistener of the class described, comprising a reservoir provided with means Jfor mounting it on a broom, and having a discharge-outlet arranged at the top of the reservoir to permit a free discharge of the contents oi' the same when the broom is inclined and adapted to out off the iiow when the broom is in an upright position.
2. A moistener of the class described, provided with means for discharging its contents interiorly of a broom, and for affording a free discharge of its contents when the broom is inclined, and for cutting off the flow when the broom is in an upright position, substantially as described.
3. A moistener of the class described provided with a hollow broom-engaging hook, communicating with the interior oi the moistener at the upper portion thereof, and formingadischarge-tube, the latter being arranged to permit a free discharge ot' the contents oi the moistener when lthe same is partially inverted, and to cut off the flow when the broom is' in an upright position, substantially as described.
4. A moistener of the class described, comprising a reservoir provided at the upper portion of its inner side with openings for discharging its contents exteriorly oi' a broom, and hollow supporting-hooks communicating With the intelior of the reservoir at the upper portion thereof arranged to discharge the contents of the reservoir interiorly of a broom substantially as described.
5. A moistener of the class described, comprising a reservoir having a straight back and abowed front, the back being provided at its upper portion with dischargeopenings, and the bowed front having an angularly-disposed top portion forming the top of the reservoir, and supporting hooks forming dischargetubes and communicating with the interoroi the reservoir at the upper portion ol the same, said openings and discharge-tubes being arranged to permit a free discharge of the contents of the reservoir when the same is partially inverted, and to cut oii the flow when the broom is in an upright position, substantially as described.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing :1s my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
