INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters fatent no. 656,683, dated August 28, 1900'. Application filed April 25, 1900. Serial No 14 225. (N model.)
To all whom zit may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. WHITAKER,- a citizen of the United States, residing at West Point, in the county of 'lroup, State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inkstands, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improvement in inkstandsowhereby the ink or fiuid that is exposed to the atmosphere is in very small quantities, while additional fluid can be quickly and expeditiously supplied thereto as desired.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an inkstand embodying my invention. Fig.2 represents a sectional View on line m 00, Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, A designates an inkstand, the same being formed of the body B, in which is located a well or reservoir 0, and a cup or dip-opening D in the laterallyprojecting portion of the base of the body B, one of the walls of said body having the vertical passage E therein, the bottom of said passage communicating with said dip-opening.
F designates a lid or cap provided with flanges G, said lid being adapted to fit closely 3 5 the walls of the well 0, the said flange G being adapted to rest upon the raised portion H on. the body 13. In said lid is the air-vent J, which is closed bya suitable plug K, and connected with or forming part of said lid is a nipple .0 M, to which is attached a ball or bulb P, the
interior of whichis in communication with the interior of the well when the lid is in position by meansof the passage L.
N designates a tube or gooseneck, oneend of which extends from thewellO through the lid F into the passage E.
The operation is as follows: The lid F is removed and the ink or other fluid placed in the well 0. Tpe lid is now placed in position,
the plug K being first removed from the vent J, it being seen that one end of the tube projects beneath the surface of the'fiuid and into the passage E. I After the lid is in position the plug K is screwed or placed in the vent J ,whereby the well 0 becomes air-tight. By squeezing the ball P the well is subjected to air-pressure, whereby the fluid is forced up through the tube N into the passage E, and thence into the cup D, where it is readily accessible to the pen,it being noted that by this means any desired quantity of ink can be forcedinto said cup or dip-opening D, the ink that is exposed tothe air and dirt being a very small amount, while it affords quick and easy'means for refilling the cup D when the ink is exhausted.
Should the passage E become clogged, the gooseneck N may be removed, leaving said passage open from top to bottom, whereby an implement may be inserted in the passage,
so that the cloggings may be pushed into the dip-opening D, from whence they may be removed without such matter entering the clean ink.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. A well having a vertical passage in one of the walls thereof, a dip-cup at the side of said well, in communication with the bottom of said passage, a gooseneck having one limb entering said well and the other limb occupying said passage, and an air-pressure device in communication with said well.
2. A Well, a dip-cup at the side of said. well, a vertical passage in one of the walls of said -well in communication with said cup, a closing-cap for said well, a gooseneck having'one limb entering said well, and fitted in said cap, and the other limb entering the top of said 0 passage, and an air-pressure device in communication with said well, the parts named being combined forming an improvement in inkstands.
