Description

A 770/?NEYS Patented Ian. 16, I900. L FISK FOUNTAIN PEN FILLING DEVICE.
' (Application filed June 14, 1899.)
No. 64l,503.
(No Model.)
WITNESSES r I I NITED *A FFI LYMAN FISK, OF HAOKENSAOK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD L. BEEKMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
FOUNTAlN-PEN-FILLING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 6l1,503, dated January 16, 1900.
Application filed June 14:, 1899.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LYMAN FISK, of I-Iackensack, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Fountain-Pen-Filling Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a device by means of which fountain-pens may be filled by drawing the ink directly from the bottle or reservoir into the pen.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicatecorresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the invention, showing it in use; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the parts.
The ink may be contained in a bottle or reservoir a of any form, closed by a stopper 1), in which isformed an air-vent c, commanded by a valve d. The valve d may be of any desired construction and serves to close the vent 0 when the device is not in use, thus preventing the evaporation of the ink.
Passed through the stopper 1) is a suctiontube, which is bent to form a straight lower portion 6, fitted in the stopperand extending down into the ink, and a U-shaped upper portion f, one arm of which is longer than the other and provided at its end with a piston g.
In using the device the reservoir of the pen is disconnected from the head-of the'pen, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the reservoir is pushed over the long arm of the portion f of the suc- Serial No. 720,496. (No model.)
tion-tube, so that the reservoir of the pen occupies the position indicated by dotted lines. The valve cl is opened by the escaping air forced through air-vent a when the penreservoir is being pushed over the long arm of said tube. The pen-reservoir should now be drawn out to the left, so that a vacuum will be created in the pen-reservoir, and the ink from the bottle or receptacle a will be drawn into the pen. It will be observed that this operation is exceedingly simple and may be performed very rapidly and easily Without danger of staining the fingers or spilling the ink in any way.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Afountain-pen-filling device, consisting of a reservoir with a stopper therein, the stop- I per having a vent, a valve commanding the vent, a suction-tube passed through the stopper and having a U-shaped portion, and a piston carried at the end of one arm of the said U-shaped portion of the suction-pipe.
2. A fountain-pen-filling device, consisting of a stopper, a suction-pipe extending through the stopper, and a piston secured to the outer end of the suction-pipe.
3. A fountain-pen-fillin g device, consisting of a reservoir or receptacle for the ink, a stopper fitted in the same, a suction-pipe extending through the stopper, and a piston secured to the outer end of the suction-pipe.
LYMAN FISK.
