It also consists in providing the body with an outlet, with which a hose or pipe may be placed in communication, for-directing the contents of the body from the same to a place of collection outside the bed or other suitable place.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a bed-pan embodying my invention. Fig. 2 rep-' resents a longitudinal vertical section thereof.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a bed-pan consisting of abottom or base B and a side or wall 0, rising therefrom and gradually ascending to the rear.

D designates the advanced portion which is to be' passed under the person who is to occupy the pan, and near said portion, Within the body, is a gutter E, which is inclined from front to rear and raised above the bottom B, terminating in the shoulder F, the upper face of said gutter being inclined in opposite directions toward the center of said face, so as to direct fluid, &c., to said center, from whence it flows down the channel into the body, it being noticed that the return of said fluid, 850., is prevented, owing to the obstacle presented by the shoulder F. The inner end of the advancing portion D is undercut, forming a guard G, which rises above the highest end of the gutter E, so that should there be any backing of the fluid, &c., from said gutter it will enter said chamber beneath the guard, and thus be prevented from overflowing at the portion D, said guard also providing a stronger structure for the partD than if said part were made solid, especially in the case of earthenware. By having the bed of the gutter E inclined or sloping to the rear of the pan and not parallel With the bottom thereof the flow of the liquid falling thereon to the rear or body of the pan is more readily effected. Furthermore, in case of any slight depression of the front of the pan, as is commonly the case, due to the pressure of the body of the person using it, the incline is still to the rear, so that the liquid is carried to the body of the pan, and so prevented from overflowing the guard. By having a raised portion in the bottom of the front of the pan the material for forming the gutter E is provided, the advantage of said gutter or of a drain from the front of the pan toward the rear thereof being as before stated. If no raised portionwere provided at this part, any slight tilting or raising of the rear portion of the pan would cause the flow of all the liquid therein to the front, which, as is readily apparent, is not desirable; also, in using the pan as a douche the fluid will thereby be enabled to flow down and out of the pipe.

To the side of the body is secured a nozzle or branch H, which is in communication with the interior of the body and adapted to have a hose or pipe J connected therewith, whereby when the pan is in use the contents of the same may be directed from the body and conveyed by the hose or pipe J to a bucket, pan, pail, &c., on the floor or elsewhere away from the bed, 850., on which the pan is used. The nozzle may be closed, when it is not desired to drain the body, by means of a cap K, a stopper, or other suitable means.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A bed-pan having a body with a chamber in the front part thereof, an inclined gutter in the rear of said chamber, and a dis charge-nozzle on said body, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. A bed-pan having a gutterE in the body thereof at or near the front thereof, said gutter being raised above the bottom, bearing the shoulder F, substantially as described.

3. A bed-pan having a body with sides ascending from front to rear, a raised gutter on the bottom of said body, anda discharge-nozzle, substantially as described.
