Be it known that I, ROBERT C. BUTTON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Centralia, in the county of Lewis and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tanks for Shower-Baths, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices used for taking baths of that type in which an elevated tank or water holder is employed, from which the water is drawn for use in a spray, in connection with a brush, or any other form of device desired.

My invention pertains particularly to the tank or water holder and the means for tempering the water used therein and for drawing it off as used.

The object of my invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character and to make them more practical and easy of use and to keep in good condition.

My invention comprises the novel parts and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the annexed drawings I have shown my invention embodied in the form which is now preferred by me.

Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the tank taken on a central plane which extends from front to rear. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a perspective showing the device hung up as would be done when putting it into use.

The tank A, of my device is a two-compartment tank, one compartment being placed above the other, the compartments being formed by placing a partition 3 across the tank about one third of the way down from the top. The upper compartment 1 is preferably open and of about half the capacity of the lower compartment 6, for a reason hereafter stated. This upper compartment 1 is a tempering compartment, or one designed for preliminary reception of the water to be used and in which its temperature may be modified before discharging it into the lower or main compartment. To facilitate this I have provided the upper compartment with a thermometer 5, which thermometer is preferably inserted in such a way as to be readily removable. The manner illustrated for doing this is to place small drops 50 of solder against the sides of the tank and overlapping the front face Specification of Letters Patent.

of the thermometer plate, the thermometer being greased or otherwise treated so that the solder will not stick thereto while the solder is being placed. This will hold the thermometer securely and permit its ready withdrawal and insertion.

A discharge opening is provided in the partition 3, which opening is controlled by a valve 4. This valve as shown consists of a plate of rubber, leather or equivalent material secured by an extension at 40 and provided with a central depending stem 41 to which may be secured a string 8, this string extending through the front face of the lower compartment 6 near its upper limit, so that by pulling this string from outside the tank the valve may be raised to discharge the contents of the upper compartment into the lower.

lVith the two compartments proportioned as shown it takes two fillings of the upper compartment to fill the lower. The lower compartment is supposed to be filled with water tempered to the temperature desired for the cleansing operations of the bath. The upper compartment, after the lower has been filled with warm water, is designed to be filled with cold or colder water, this to remain in this upper compartment and not drawn upon for purposes of the bath, until the lower compartment has been emptied, whereupon this water is discharged into the compartment and becomes available for a cold water dash to finish the bath.

The discharge opening at the bottom of the tank is provided with a short nipple or sleeve 9 which projects but little or none from the outer surface of the tank. The opening in this sleeve is preferably slightly conical, the larger end being outward. The tube 11 which conveys the water to the shower, brush, or whatever device is used, has a nipple or hollow plug 10 in one end, this being of a size and shape to fit closely in the sleeve 9. This construction obviates the projecting faucet or cook which is quite generally used in such places, and which is likely to get broken or loosened and which interferes seriously with easy packing. The insertion of the metal plug 10 in the sleeve 9 is much handier than placing a rubber tube over a nipple or faucet.

The upper compartment being designed for final use as a reservoir of the cold water which is to be used at the end of the bath, need be no more than half as large as the lower, which holds the warm water. The double filling of this compartment with warm water adds but little to the time required to get it ready for a bath, and its smaller size decreases materially the bulk of the device, and therefore its convenience is increased. In Fig. 3 I have shown it as hung upon a wall by a ring 7 and as being used with a bath brush 12. Any other kind pf irlrllplement may be substituted for the ,rus

-The hole 80 in the face of the tank through which passes the string for operating the valve 4, is intended primarily as an air vent for the lower or mam compartment 6. The receipt by this compartment of two charges from the upper tank will not quite fill it, to this hole. Another function performed by this is to secure a layer of air between the hot and the cold water so that neither will alter the temperature of the other.

What I claim as my invention is:

A tank or reservoir for shower bath and like uses, having a partition dividing it into an upper and a lower compartment, a valve communicating between said compartments, a stem depending from said valve, a valve operating cord connected with said stem and extending forward and out through the wall of the lower compartment just below the partition.
