PAPER-WEIG HT AND SPONGE-CUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,145, dated October 19, 1897. Application fuea February 3,1897. serai No. 621,833. (No model.)
' To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM JAQUES, of Geneseo, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Paper-Weight and SpongefGup, of which the 'following is a full, clear, and exact descripvide a reservoir for liquid connected with theA body of the article, said reservoir being compressible and so arranged that the liquid contained therein may be supplied in predetermined quantities to a receptacle in the body of the article, the surplus iiuid being withdrawn from this receptaclewhen the reservoiris relieved from pressure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a paper-weight and sponge-cup, or a paper-weight having a receptacle to which the drawings, forminga part of this specification,"
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
vFigure 1 is a side elevation of "the device. Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The body A of the device is made of glass, Celluloid, metal, or any desired material, and may be given any suitable contour. The
l body of the device is to be primarily used as a paper-weight, and in the top of the body a chamber 1,0 is formed, adapted asareceptacle for water or other liquid used for moistening purposes. An opening 11 is made in the bottom of the chamberor receptacle 10, which opening is in communication with a channel 12. The channelis carried in direction of the outer face of the body, and terminates in an enlarged portion 13, the enlargement being substantially pear-shaped. The enlargement may, however, be given other contour, and adjacentjto the enlarged outer end 13 of the channel 12 a cavity or recess 14 is preferably made in the outer face of the body.
In connection with the body a hollow sphere 15 or a bulb is employed, constructed of rubberor a like material. This hollow sphere or bulb is provided with a shank 16, enlarged between its ends, the enlargement of the shank corresponding in shape to the contour of the enlarged portion 13 of the channel 12, in which it is to enter. The enlarged channel portion 13, however, is of less dimensions than the normal dimensionsof the shank 16. The outer end of the shank is open' and its inner end communicates with the interior of the hollow sphere or bulb 15. The shank 16 of thebulb 15 is introduced into the enlarged portion 13 of the channel 12, the outer face of the bulb adjacent to the shank fitting to the wall of the recess 14 in the body. Vater may be supplied in any desired quantities to the receptacle 10 by simply pressing the bulb or h ollow sphere 15, and the water may be utilized tomoisten a sponge, to dampen the finger, or for any suitable purpose. The bulb maybe filled with water after its removal or may be supplied, and preferably is supplied, by placing water in the chamber 10 and Compressing and releasing the bulb.
In operation when the bulb or sphere is released vfrom 'pressure the expansion of the bulb will draw into the same any surplus water that may be in the receptacle, thereby preventing the spilling of the water in the event the device should be overturned.
' This invention will be specially useful to school-children, as affording a ready means of cleaning their slates, and to dressmakers or tailors for moistening seams before pressing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentp 1. A paper-weight or like article, iprovided with a chamber in its upper face, a'channel IOS connected with the bottom of said chamber, having an enlargement at its outer end, and a bulb adapted to Contain liquid and constructed of an elastic material, said bulb being provided with a shank arranged to enter the enlargement at the outer end of said channel and to fill the space at said enlargement, as and for the purpose specified.
f2. A sponge-holder having a rigid base with a conca-vity in its upper side forming a cup to receive the sponge, the base having a passage run laterally from the bottom of the eoncavit-y, and a eoinpressible bulb in communication with the passage.
3. A sponge-holder having a rigid body portion With a eoneavity in its upper face, the coneavity forming a eup for the sponge, and the body portion having a horizontally-extending passage run from the central lower portion of the coneavity to one side of the body portion, and a compressible bulb in communication with said passage and held at the said one side of the body portion.
4. A sponge-holder having a rigid base with a concavity in the upper side, the coneavity forming a cup for the sponge and the body portion having a passage run from the coneavity to one side of the body portion, and a compressible bulb Communicating with lthe passage and held at the said one side of the body portion.
5. A sponge-holder having a rigid body portion with a eoncavity in its upper face, the eoncavity forming a eup for receiving the sponge, and a eompressible bulb held at one side of the body portion and having eommu nieation with the eoncavity.
