Description

atnt @fitte @geiten .e taies Letters Patent No. 78,668, dated June .9, 1868; antedated May 22, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT 1N HATS.
@La Stimuli numb in it there rttrrs @anni tra linking part iiftlge annie.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that we, FLEURY Hoor and CoNsrAivr BAUDOUIN, of the city and vState of New York, have invented and made a certain new and 'useful Improvement in Hats and Bonnets; and we do hereby declare the following to be a correct description of the same, and of the features that distinguish our said invention from others that have preceded it. s V I Y The object of our said invention is to produce a hat or bonnet having a lustre on the surface that is Waterproof, rendering the hator bonnet much more durable than heretofore, and of such a texture that it can be washed, if necessary, for cleansing the surface, and. will not be injured. like the hats or bonnets that'have heretofore been dyed with aniline colors, in imitation of bronze, but which are quickly injured by moisture.
The nature of our said inventionv consists in the employment of metallic leaf or foil, attached to the fabric of the hat or bonnet, and colored, when desired, with water-proof varnishlw i I The metallic foil or leaf is itself water-proof, but is sometimes liable to changecolor under atmospheric influence; We therefore prefer to varnish the same after the hat has-beenpress-ed, and for this purpose we find Cepal-varnish the best, both onva'ccount of its adhering to the metal, not cracking, and being a convenient vehicle for introducing any desired color. v 4
Where the foil or leaf isapplied to straw, it may be caus'ed to adhere by sizing and pressure, an elastic surface being employed to cause' thewldeafuor foilwtko` assume the undulating character of the surface of'sueh straw; or tlmy'beuappliedto/the surface of ankyfabiiibmthatfis pressedmtotlie "shape of a hat or bonnet, either before or after `it is shaped. l
Bonnets and bats made with a metallicV surface, formed of foil or leaf, caused to adhere to a body or form composing the hat, are new articles'of manufacture, higlilyornam'ental and useful, and possessing peculiar properties not found in other hats or bonnets.
rllhis improvement is applicable to all shapes and colors of bonnets, and made from all kinds ofmaterials.
In the annexed drawing we have represented our improvement as'applied to a straw fabric, the drawing being in larger size for better illustration. 'a represents the braids ofstraiv, or similar material; b, the sheet of foil; and e, the varnish forming the surface. I
We do notl claim metallicpowder or brenne-dust, applied with a varnish to hats or bonnets, but
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I A bonnet, having metallic foil or leaf, pressed upon its surface, for the purposes and as specified.'
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our signatures, this fifteenth day of August, 1867.
