Description

UNITED STATES a A a WILLIAM F. WARBURTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.
Specification forming part. of Letters Patent No. 42,977, dated May 3l, 1864.
To all whom fit may concern.
Be it known that I, W. F. WAREUETON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Hats 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, referen ce bein ghad to the aecompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of the combination, in the manufacture of hats of book-binders ornamental muslin with the outer covering of the hat, in the manner described hereinafter, so that the twofold purpose of imparting stift'- ness to the body of the hat and exposing an ornamental surface in the interior of the same may be attained, thereby avoiding the introduction of the usual ornamental lining.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to practice my invention, I will now proceed to describe the manner of carrying it into effect.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a sectional view drawn to an enlarged scale, and showing the outer covering and inner ornamental lining of the hat, the former being designated by the letter A and the latter by the letter B. Fig. 2 illustrates the character of the ornamental muslin.
In forming the body of the hat I use as the base or foundation a fabric generally known as boolibinclers muslin7-that is, muslin stifened by size and by compression between calenderrolls, or otherwise. This fabric, which is used to agreat extent for the backs ot' books, is ornamented on one side by coloring and by corrugations or other projections and recesses made by embossing or during the process of calendering, these corrugations serving to add stiffness to the fabric. I cover the hat-block,
or as much of the block on which the hat has to be formed as may be deemed necessary, with this muslin, t-he ornamental surface being next to the block and the edges of the fabric being properly secured.. To the fabric thus placed on the block I cement the cover of felt, plush, or cloth which forms the exterior of the hat, and this cover having' been properly dressed the hat is complet-e.
When additional stit'ness has to be imparted to the body ofthe hat, light muslin or other material may be cemented between the foundation of book-binders muslin and the exterior cover.
It has been usual in the manufacture of hats and caps to place within the body of the same ornamental linings. Myinvention obviates the necessity of this, as the outer surface of the colored, corrugated, embossed, or
otherwise ornamented muslin, in addition tov imparting the desired rigidity to the hat, is exposed to view within the interior of the same, and presents a neat and pleasing appearance.
What is herein said in relation to hats is equally applicable to caps and bonnets manufactured in an analogous manner.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in the manufacture of h ats, of book-binders ornamen ted muslin with the outer covering of the hat, in the manner and for the twofold purpose specitied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. F. WARB URTON.
