IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,019, dated August 7, 1866.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. WARBUR- TON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Hats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention consists of a sweat-band se- 1 cured to the interior of a hat or cap at intervals, and thereby rendered self-accommodating to the head at a number of points, thus making the hat more comfortable to the wearers head, and at the same time insuring a thorough ventilation of the interior of the hat.

My invention further consists in the combination, described hereinafter, ofthe said sweat-band with a rim or band of metal or other equivalent material.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to make my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of a hat with my improvement; Fig. 2, a vertical section on the line 1 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a vertical section of a modification of my improvement; Fig. 4, part of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, part of Fig. 3; Fig. 6, another modification, and Fig. 7 adia' gram illustrative of my invention.

Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are drawn to an enlarged scale, and similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

On reference to Figs. 1, 2, and 4, A represents part of the body of an ordinary hat, and lithe brim. To the interior of the hat are secured the strip 0, of thin metal, and the sweat-band D, the former being continuous and extending entirely round the hat and fitting closely to the in side of the same, the sweatband also extending entirely round the hat, but being secured to it at intervals and in such a manner that there maybe a number of spaces, a, throughout the interior of the hat, (see Fig. 1,) owing to which the'sWeat-band must be of a flexible character at a number of points, and the entire band rendered so selfaccommodating to the wearers head as to insure comfort; at the same time a thorough ventilation of the interior of the hat is insured, as will be bestunderstood by reference to Fig- 7, where the line A represents the interior of the hat 5 D, the course pursued by the sweatband, and E the line of the wearers head.

Not only are there spaces a between the sweat-band and the hat, for the admission'of a plentiful supply of air to the interior, but additional spaces between the head and the sweat-band present themselves at m for the same purpose.

The'object of the metal ring or band 0, when applied to soft hats, is to strengthen that part of the body to which the sweat-band is secured by eyelets, stitches, or other suitable fastenings, which pass through and serve to secure both bands to the hat. f

The sweat-band and ring may be secured together and be sold separately from the hat, and adjusted to any hat required.

In the modification illustrated by Figs. 3 and 5 the metal ring or band is situated on the outside of the hat, serving the purpose of strengthening that part of the body to which the sweatband is secured, and being concealed from view by the ordinary hat-band.

Although I prefer the use of the metal band or ring for the purpose described in connection with soft hats, it may be dispensed with in stiff hats, which may be made of sufficient strength to withstand the strains to which they are subjected by the action of the sweatband when the hat is adjusted to the wearers head.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A sweat-band secured to the interior of a hat or cap at intervals, and arranged to be yielding or elastic at a number of points, in the manner and for the purpose described.
