To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PATRICK H. HAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Norwalk, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Methods of Forming Edges of Hat- Bodies, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object the production of hats with finished felted edges of greatly increased thickness and alike on both sides, thus doing away with a raw edge or the finishing of a raw edge with a binding, and by making the thickened felted edge of the brim alike on both sides, I enable the manufacturer to finish either side of a hat body and thus save as firsts, hat bodies having blemishes in one side which do not appear on the other side.

With these and other objects in View, I

have devised the novel method of forming the edges of hat bodies which I will now describe referring to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts.

Figure 1 is an elevation of a hat body after a hardening operation, and showing the manner in which a strip is out from the lower edge thereof;

Fig. 2 a similar view showing the manner in which the severed strip is attached, similarly to a binding, over the new edge of the body;

Fig. 3 a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale, showing the strip in place, the body being ready for the'felting or sizing operations;

Fig. 4 a similar sectional view of a finished hat body, and

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a completed hat having the edge of the brim finished in accordance with the present invention.

In carrying out my novel method, the hat bodies are felted or hardened more or less after removal from the cone so that they the edge of the body with the severed strip folded over and stitched in place on the edge is indicated at the right in Fig. 2 and also in Fig. 8 which shows in section the edge ready for additional felting or sizing operations. These additional felting or sizing operations may be performed in any ordinary or preferred manner, the only requirement being to size, shrink or felt the body down to size. The result of these additional op erations is to thoroughly incorporate the stitched on strip with the body, leaving the body with a rounded and smoothly finished edge of greatly increased thickness but corresponding otherwise with the rest of the body and brim, and providing an edge greatly superior in every way and much neat-er and more attractive than either a cut edge or an edge finished by binding in the usual manner. During the operation of sizing or felting the bodies down to size, the stitches are usually picked out. This completes the making of the body. The several operations required tocomplete the hat may be performed in any ordinary 0r preferred manner and are not described as they form no portion of the present invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The method of forming the edges of hat bodies which consists in cutting a strip from the edge of the body, folding the severed strip over the new edge of the body so that it lies on both sides thereof, stitching the strip in place, and then felting the body down to size leaving it with a rounded felted edge of increased thickness.
