Be it known that I, LIZZIE SHAFENER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Vanwert, in the county of Van Vert and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handle Attachments for Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to new and useful improvements in handle attachments for brooms and similar utensils, and especially to attachments adapted to be used in connection with the ordinary broom-handle to give it additional length where necessity requires or it may be desired.

The object of the invention is to provide a handle attachment of the character above mentioned which is simple in construction and which maybe readily attached to and detached from the handle in connection with which it is employed.

I attain the object stated by the construction to be more fully described hereinafter and the novelty1 of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.

The invention is fully and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a view in elevation of a broom of well-known form having my invention applied thereto in operative position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the attachment, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a broom-handle of a well-known form and in connection with which my invention is intended to be employed.

2 designates an additional handle-section which is adapted to be secured to the end of the handle for the purpose of giving additional length thereto where a handle of the usual length would be too short to permit of the broom being satisfactorily used, as in brushing cornices, ceilings, walls, &c. To

the end of the handle-section 2 is secured an attaching device by means of which said handle-section may be attached to and secured in operative position on the end of the handle. This attaching' device consists of a substantially cylindrical tube or sleeve 3, formed,

preferably, of a suitable metal and of such length and diameter as may be required, said sleeve at one end being placed over the end of the handle-section and fastened thereto by means of suitable fastening devices, such as screws 4C. The sleeve is made of a sufficient length to extend well beyond the end of thc handle-section, said extended portion being constructed to receive and be secured in position on the end of a broom-handle. rlhe portion of the sleeve which extends beyond the handle-section, or that part adapted to receive the broom-handle l, is provided on its outer surface with screw-threads 5, which extend from the lower end of the sleeve to a point short of the handle-section, a short straight portion 6 of the sleeve remaining between the threaded portion and the handle-section. At its lower end portion the sleeve is turned inwardly to form a gripping flange or face 7, which engages the broom-handle when the handle-section 2 is operatively applied thereto.

The sleeve, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, is provided with longitudinally-extending oppositely-arranged slits 8 8, which divide the lower portion of said sleeve into gripping members 9 9, substantially as shown, which are adapted to be sprung outwardly when the attachment is applied to the broom-handle. Mounted upon the sleeve is a gripping-collar formed from sheet metal and bent to provide a plurality of screw-thread corrugations of suoli dimensions as to engage those on the sleeve and to be moved lengthwise thereof to compress the gripping members 9 9 into engagement with the broom-handle to secure the handle attachment thereto. The upward movement of the collar 10 will be limited by the heads of the fastening-screws 1i, which will effectually prevent the loss of the collar by its slipping over the end of the handle-section.

The method of applying and removing the handle attachment may be rehearsed as follows: The gripping-collar 10 is operated to permit the free movement of the gripping members away from each other. The broomhandle is then inserted in the sleeve, the upper end of the handle being seated in the straight portion 6, and by turning the collar IOO lO to move toward the end of the sleeve the gripping members will be forced toward each other and the gripping-flange moved into positive engagement with the broom-handle, whereby the handle attachment will be securely fastened in position and the broom made capable of employment under circumstances which would render a handle of ordinary length useless. lt will be seen that by seating the end of the handle l in the cylindrical portion 6 said handle will be held against any movement within the sleeve during the process of sweeping, and a stiff joint will be formed between the handle and the handle attachment.
